New Delhi, July 21: The Opposition Congress, on Tuesday, staged an unprecedented sit-in protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official residence at Lok Kalyan Marg, demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the police action against students protesting the alleged NEET paper leak.

The protest, led by Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, was attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and several senior party leaders.

It came a day after police cracked down on students marching towards Parliament under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), leaving several protesters injured.

Addressing the press, Rahul Gandhi alleged that the government is refusing to take responsibility for the police action and avoiding a discussion on the issue in Parliament.

"We have marched to the Prime Minister's residence to seek answers for the brutal treatment meted out to young students yesterday. The government neither wants to take responsibility nor is it willing to allow a discussion on the issue in Parliament. The Prime Minister and the Home Minister must resign for destroying the future of India's youth," Gandhi said.

Congress president Kharge described the police action as an attack on the country's youth and said the party would continue to stand with students.

"The government has committed a grave injustice against the youth of this country and must be held accountable," Kharge said.

Before marching to Lok Kalyan Marg, Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders visited injured students admitted to Dr Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi.

The Congress delegation later staged a dharna outside the Prime Minister's residence for nearly 20 minutes, raising slogans against the Centre and accusing the government of suppressing the voices of students demanding accountability over the examination controversy.

The protest drew the attention of the Prime Minister's Office, with Minister of State in the PMO Jitendra Singh, accompanied by Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan, meeting Rahul Gandhi at the protest site and urging him to end the sit-in.

"The government is ready to discuss in Parliament all issues related to NEET and the associated movement," Singh told reporters after meeting Gandhi.

He, however, said that when the Home Secretary explained the site was not suitable for a sit-in, Gandhi responded that it was his prerogative to sit wherever he wanted.

"Gandhi's behaviour does not align with the principles of democracy," Singh added.

Several Congress Members of Parliament also alleged that police attempted to forcibly remove them from the protest site and used force during the demonstration.

Imphal, July 21: Cadres cited years of hardship and disillusionment, choosing peace over militancy to rebuild lives through skill development programmes

In one of the largest mass surrenders by the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (People's War Group), KCP (PWG), in recent years, 46 active cadres, including four women, laid down arms on Tuesday at a "homecoming ceremony" held at the Mantripukhri Garrison, in Imphal East district.

The surrendered militants handed over a substantial cache of arms and explosives, including 28 firearms, among them three AK-series rifles, four AK-56 rifles, an INSAS Ex-Calibur rifle, a Self Loading Rifle (SLR), a 9 mm carbine, three .303 rifles, a Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) launcher, three pistols and 11 country-made guns.

Security forces also recovered 16 magazines, nine RPG shells, 23 hand grenades, seven Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) weighing around 15 kg, detonators, communication devices and 342 rounds of ammunition.

Officials described the surrender as unprecedented for the outfit, noting that previous surrender events typically involved only five to 12 cadres.

Representing the surrendered cadres, the outfit's chairman, Laishram Ranjit Meitei, said years of hardship and growing disillusionment with armed struggle had prompted the decision to return to the mainstream.

"Our cadres had become deeply frustrated and faced numerous hardships. We decided to return in the interest of peace and for the welfare of our society and community. We hope the government will support us with vocational training, machinery and financial assistance for self-employment," he said.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, senior Army and Assam Rifles officers, top civil and police officials, and representatives of various security agencies attended the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the return of the cadres marked an important step towards restoring peace in Manipur, which has witnessed prolonged ethnic violence since May 2023.

"Guns and violence can never bring development. Today's homecoming is a significant step towards restoring lasting peace and strengthening the reconciliation process in the state," Singh said. 

Highlighting the rehabilitation measures available to the surrendered militants, Home Minister Konthoujam said the Centre's surrender and rehabilitation policy aims to help former insurgents reintegrate into society through financial assistance and skill development.

"Each surrendered cadre will receive Rs 4 lakh, which will remain in a fixed deposit for three years. This is not a loan but a rehabilitation grant. While the government cannot promise employment, we will extend support for self-employment and skill development so that they can begin a new life," he said.

Under the Revised Scheme for Surrender-cum-Rehabilitation of Militants in the North East States, 2018, each surrendered cadre will receive a one-time rehabilitation grant of Rs 4 lakh, which will remain in a fixed deposit for three years, along with a monthly stipend of Rs 6,000 during the rehabilitation period.

The People's War Group emerged as a splinter faction of the KCP following ideological differences within the parent organisation.

New Delhi, Jul 21: Shipping minister Sarbananda Sonowal, on Tuesday, said he is deeply anguished by the loss of lives, including of four Indian seafarers, following a missile attack on merchant vessel MV Golden Leo departing Odesa, Ukraine.

Sonowal, in a social media post, said India strongly condemns such attacks that endanger innocent civilian crew members and impede the freedom of navigation and commerce.

"Deeply anguished by the tragic loss of lives, including of four brave Indian seafarers, following a missile attack on merchant vessel MV Golden Leo departing Odesa, Ukraine. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this hour of immense grief," he said.

Four Indian seafarers were among 10 people killed in an attack on a Guinea-Bissau-flagged merchant vessel off the coast of Ukraine, prompting strong condemnation from India and fresh demands to protect commercial shipping during conflicts.

The ship was hit by Russian cruise missiles, the Ukrainian Air Force said. This was the first instance of any casualties of Indian seafarers in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

"Our Mission in Ukraine, alongside the DGMA and RPSL, is closely monitoring the situation, conducting necessary verifications and ensuring all assistance is extended to the next of kin, on priority basis. My prayers are also with the Indian sailor who is injured and currently hospitalised for his swift and full recovery," Sonowal said.

India on Tuesday summoned the Russian charge d'affaires (CDA) and lodged a strong protest over the incident.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it conveyed to the Russian CDA India's "grave concerns and unequivocal condemnation" of the attack.

"As per information available, four Indian nationals have tragically lost their lives, while one is hospitalised in a critical condition," it had said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Russia attacked a civilian vessel navigating Ukraine's maritime corridor on Sunday and its crew included citizens of Syria and India.

The MEA said the Indian mission in Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation and is making every effort to extend all possible assistance to those affected.

Guwahati, July 21: The judicial cross-examination of Palme Borthakur, sister of late cultural icon Zubeen Garg, concluded on Tuesday, with her alleging that the defence repeatedly attempted to portray the artiste as an alcoholic during the ongoing witness trial.

Speaking to the press after her examination, Borthakur expressed anguish over what she described as persistent attempts by the defence to portray Garg as a habitual alcohol consumer, while overlooking his contributions to Assamese culture and society.

"What saddens me is that Zubeen Garg, who was not just my brother but a man who took Assam to the global stage, is being portrayed as an alcoholic in court. I don't understand this," she said.

Questioning the basis of such claims, Borthakur said Garg's accomplishments over more than five decades stood in stark contrast to the image the defence was allegedly trying to project.

"If that was the case, when did he find the time to write and compose songs? When did he work for Assamese cinema, help people, attend programmes and achieve everything he did in his 52 years?" she asked.

She alleged that the defence was ignoring Garg's artistic legacy and social contributions in an attempt to establish a particular narrative before the court.

"Leaving everything aside, they are trying very hard to establish that he was under the influence of alcohol 24 hours a day. That is extremely hurtful," she said.

She further claimed that the defence raised questions about Garg's personal life, including allegations that he rarely stayed at home and spent most of his time outside.

Borthakur said she found it difficult to reconcile such arguments with the fact that Garg had devoted much of his life to promoting Assam and its culture.

"My brother lost his life while working for Assam. The defence lawyers are Assamese too, but I have seen a different side of them during the proceedings. They say it is part of their profession," she remarked.

According to Borthakur, some members of the defence team had even described themselves as among Garg's biggest admirers before beginning the cross-examination.

Describing the cross-examination as emotionally draining, Borthakur said she broke down several times as details surrounding her brother's death were repeatedly discussed in court.

"There were several emotional and technical questions during the last four to five days of cross-examination. I broke down at times while remembering the incidents and seeing the accused in front of me. But I was able to control my emotions and stand by my statements and the evidence," she said.

Asked whether she felt she had been emotionally manipulated during the questioning, Borthakur replied in the affirmative.

"Definitely. I was speaking about my brother's murder. Certain questions were asked to trigger my emotions so that I would either be left speechless or unable to support my statements. But I successfully overcame that," she said.

She had earlier alleged that repeated questioning on personal and sensitive aspects of her brother's life appeared aimed at undermining her testimony.

Guwahati, July 21: The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati, on Tuesday, formally commenced its first academic session with an inaugural batch of 52 MBA students at its transit campus in Tech City, Bongora.

Addressing the inaugural batch, Sarma said the launch of the MBA programme fulfilled a long-standing aspiration of the people of Assam and the Northeast, and has opened new opportunities for students in the region.

"With the commencement of its MBA programme, IIM Guwahati today becomes a proud member of the prestigious family of Indian Institutes of Management. This is a historic day for Assam and the Northeast," he said.

The Chief Minister noted that the inaugural batch comprises 52 students from 18 states and said work on the permanent campus, spread across 189 acres, is progressing rapidly.

"We hope to see the permanent campus completed within the next three years, and the State government will take all necessary steps to expedite the work," he said.

Turning to the broader education ecosystem, Sarma said Assam today hosts nearly every major national-level institution, including IIT Guwahati, AIIMS Guwahati, NIT Silchar, National Law University, National Institute of Design, National Forensic Sciences University, Central Institute of Technology, Kokrajhar, and several premier research institutions.

However, he expressed concern that local students were not adequately represented in these institutions.

"Despite having multiple national institutions in Assam, our students do not occupy even 20% of the seats. We have failed to motivate our children to aspire for and enter these premier institutions," he said.

Emphasising the need for a stronger educational environment, Sarma added, "I want to see at least 50% of these seats filled by Assamese students. With all the resources available to us, we must create a true academic atmosphere in Assam."

He urged local communities, particularly in Palashbari, to expose students to emerging technologies and research facilities by organising visits to institutions and innovation centres in the region.

The Chief Minister also highlighted the rapid progress that led to the establishment of the institute, recalling that he had written to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in May 2022 and later raised the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2023.

"Within a year, approval for setting up an IIM in Assam was granted, and in August 2025 the Union Cabinet institutionalised the proposal. Today, that vision has become a reality," he said.

Sarma thanked Prime Minister Modi and Union Education Ministry for facilitating the establishment of the institute, which has been recognised as the country's 22nd IIM and the second in the Northeast, with IIM Ahmedabad serving as its mentor institution.

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the Digital Design and 3D Printing Centre of Excellence at Tech City, Bongora.

Referring to the facility during his address, he said advanced manufacturing technologies would play a key role in the State's industrial future.

"Before coming here, I visited the 3D printing facility set up by Amtron. We must take pride in the fact that components used in refineries, hardware manufacturing, cancer treatment, mining operations and even aircraft systems can now be produced using these machines," he said.

Sarma also reiterated that Azim Premji University would be established in the area, saying Palashbari is emerging as a major education and innovation hub with two institutions of international standard set to operate from the region.

New Delhi, July 21: Parliament remained deadlocked for the second consecutive day on Tuesday as Opposition protests forced repeated adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, leaving little legislative business to be transacted.

The Opposition sought discussions on the alleged NEET paper leak, police action during the “Sansad Chalo” protest, and the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple in Ayodhya, leading to slogan-shouting and repeated disruptions in both Houses.

In the Lok Sabha, disruptions began as soon as Question Hour commenced at 11 am. Opposition members trooped into the Well of the House, raising slogans over the NEET paper leak and the alleged baton-charge on students protesting the issue.

Speaker Om Birla urged the protesting members to return to their seats, assuring them that they would get an opportunity to raise their concerns in accordance with parliamentary rules. However, with the protests continuing, he adjourned the House.

When proceedings resumed at noon, Opposition members again raised slogans, forcing ministers to table parliamentary papers amid the din.

Repeated appeals from the Chair asking members to resume their seats went unheeded, leading to another adjournment until 2 pm.

The deadlock persisted after the House reconvened in the afternoon. Presiding officer Dilip Saikia appealed to Opposition MPs to participate in the proceedings, but the protests continued unabated, prompting the House to be adjourned for the remainder of the day.

Tuesday marked the second consecutive day of disruptions in the Lok Sabha, with Opposition members pressing for discussions on the alleged irregularities in the NEET examination, the police action during Monday's protest march in Delhi and the Ayodhya temple donation theft allegations.

The Rajya Sabha witnessed a similar impasse. Soon after official papers were laid on the table, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge sought to raise the issue of the police action against students protesting the alleged NEET paper leak.

Kharge alleged that police resorted to a lathi-charge and used tear gas against the protesters.

His remarks triggered slogan-shouting from Treasury Bench members, which was met with counter-slogans from the Opposition, prompting Chairman C P Radhakrishnan to adjourn the House till noon.

When the Upper House reassembled, Secretary General P C Mody read out a message from the Lok Sabha informing members that the Lower House had adopted a motion recommending that the Rajya Sabha elect two members to the Joint Committee on Offices of Profit to fill vacancies arising from the retirement of N R Elango and Deepak Prakash.

However, amid continuing protests, the House was adjourned again till 2 pm.

The post-lunch sitting also failed to function. As Opposition MPs resumed sloganeering, Deputy Chairman Harivansh adjourned the Rajya Sabha for the day.

Jorhat, July 21: The flood situation in Assam's Jorhat district deteriorated further on Tuesday, with the death toll rising to five and one person still missing, as tens of thousands of residents remained marooned without basic amenities amid one of the worst flood spells in recent years.

Large parts of the district have been inundated following heavy inflow from the Bhogdoi River, submerging villages, agricultural land and residential areas.

The district witnessed another tragedy after a child reportedly died in the floods, taking Jorhat's overall death toll to five.

Search operations are also underway for Pabitra Nayak, who went missing after being swept away by strong currents in the Selenghat area.

According to local residents, Pabitra Nayak and another man, Deba Nayak, had attempted to cross floodwaters when the incident occurred.

"Almost every area, including Jaji and Teok, is under water. In Selenghat, Pabitra Nayak was swept away by the strong current. Deba Nayak somehow managed to cross safely, but Pabitra went missing. Local youths searched for him, but the water level and the force of the current made rescue efforts extremely difficult," a resident said.

According to the Jorhat district administration, the floods have affected 162 villages and 50,987 people, while 4,443 hectares of agricultural land remain under water.

As the crisis deepened, survivors narrated harrowing accounts of losing everything they owned, including household belongings, essential documents and medicines.

Among the worst affected are pregnant women, children and elderly residents, many of whom have been forced to spend days and nights in the open with little access to relief.

One pregnant woman, now sheltering on an embankment after her house was washed away, said she had lost all her belongings, including her medical records.

"We have nothing left. Everything has been swept away by the flood. We have not received any relief and are now living in a temporary shelter on the embankment. I am four months pregnant and my medical documents, medicines and all our belongings have been washed away. We need help," she said.

Residents said the lack of clean drinking water have become one of the most pressing challenges, with many surviving on whatever food they managed to save before floodwaters entered their homes.

"We have never witnessed floods of this magnitude in recent years. The water has taken away everything we owned. We don't know how we will rebuild our lives," another resident said.

The worsening situation in Jorhat forms part of a wider flood emergency across upper Assam, where Sivasagar and Charaideo have also witnessed unprecedented inundation following a cloudburst in the upstream region.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the three districts were experiencing water levels unseen in more than half a century.

"Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo districts are witnessing unprecedented flooding following the cloudburst upstream, with water levels unseen in over half a century. We urge all affected families to cooperate with the authorities and move to safer locations whenever advised," Sarma said in a post on a microblogging platform.

He said the sudden surge had also caused extensive damage to flood-control infrastructure, resulting in eight embankment breaches in the Jorhat region.

"Due to exceptionally high flood discharge and hydraulic stress following the cloudburst, eight breaches have occurred in embankments in the Jorhat region. Immediate temporary measures, including bamboo bandalling, bamboo palisading and emergency protection works using EC bags, have been initiated," he said.

With the humanitarian crisis intensifying and large swathes of the district still submerged, the Chief Minister is scheduled to visit Jorhat, Sivasagar and Charaideo on Wednesday to assess the flood damage and review ongoing relief, rescue and flood protection measures on the ground.

Jaipur, July 21: The deaths of two women following childbirth in Jodhpur on Monday have once again raised concerns over maternal healthcare in Rajasthan, even as the state government claims to have intensified monitoring of pregnant women through a massive statewide inspection campaign.

The latest fatalities come after similar maternal deaths were reported from Kota, Bikaner, and Banswara, prompting renewed scrutiny of the state's referral system and emergency obstetric care.

One of the deceased, Samu, underwent a normal delivery at Tinwari Hospital on June 24 and gave birth to a baby girl.

However, severe postpartum bleeding could not be controlled, forcing doctors to refer her first to Umaid Hospital and later to Mahatma Gandhi Hospital in Jodhpur. Doctors performed an emergency hysterectomy (uterus removal) after the bleeding continued. Despite multiple blood transfusions, dialysis, and ventilator support, she succumbed to complications late on Sunday.

According to hospital authorities, Samu suffered hypovolemic shock due to massive blood loss, resulting in kidney failure and multi-organ complications. During treatment, she received six units of blood, 14 units of plasma, and 10 units of cryoprecipitate.

In the second case, Dimple was admitted to Mathuradas Mathur Hospital on June 30, the day she delivered her baby. She remained under treatment for nearly 20 days, but her condition suddenly deteriorated on July 19. She died later that night. Her post-mortem was conducted on July 20. Hospital officials said 16 women who recently gave birth have developed serious health complications in Jodhpur over the past month, with most of them having undergone Caesarean deliveries.

Among them is Dhapu, who allegedly suffered complications after receiving an incompatible blood transfusion at Umaid Hospital. She remains under treatment.

Currently, five women are admitted to Umaid Hospital, while two others, including Dhapu, are undergoing treatment at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital. Ironically, the maternal deaths come just days after the Rajasthan government completed a five-day statewide intensive inspection campaign (July 15-19) aimed at improving maternal healthcare.

According to the Medical and Health Department officials, 3,56,783 pregnant women had their medical records reviewed, 37,558 high-risk pregnancies were specially monitored, 14,836 pregnant women were contacted through real-time verification and interviews to assess the quality of healthcare services, 8,414 health institutions were inspected for medicine availability, diagnostics, equipment functionality, hygiene, and overall service quality and 7,731 Mother and Child Health & Nutrition (MCHN) sessions were monitored.

During 3,062 Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) sessions held on July 18, 1,05,629 pregnant women received specialist antenatal care. Blood tests were conducted for 98,247 women, while 12,173 women received iron sucrose therapy and 9,284 were administered FCM injections to manage severe anaemia.

As many as 16,634 pregnant women received Mother Vouchers for free sonography, officials said.

Principal Government Secretary Gayatri Rathore said every identified high-risk pregnant woman will now be monitored by the concerned ANM every third day, and deficiencies found during inspections are being addressed immediately. In the wake of the state's maternal health review, Chief Secretary V. Srinivas chaired a high-level meeting at Swasthya Bhawan and directed officials to strengthen the referral management system, particularly in rural areas.

He instructed district health officials to ensure timely availability of 104 and 108 ambulances for emergency referrals, advance intimation to referral hospitals before patient transfer, continuous monitoring of high-risk pregnancies, especially women suffering from severe anaemia, and adequate availability of blood, medicines, and emergency medical resources at government hospitals.

District officials informed the meeting that name-wise mapping of every high-risk pregnant woman has been completed, with each case linked to the concerned ANM for regular follow-up.

While the state government has highlighted extensive monitoring and quality assessments, the deaths in Jodhpur have raised questions about the effectiveness of emergency obstetric care and the implementation of referral protocols at the ground level.

Health experts point out that postpartum haemorrhage remains one of the leading causes of maternal mortality, making timely referral, availability of blood products, and rapid intervention critical to saving lives. The latest incidents are likely to intensify the debate over maternal healthcare standards in Rajasthan despite the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen monitoring and antenatal services.

New Delhi, July 21:  The government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have attracted actual investments of more than Rs 2.40 lakh crore, generated over 14.15 lakh direct and indirect jobs, and enabled exports worth Rs 15.2 lakh crore across 14 key sectors as of March 31, 2026, Parliament was informed on Tuesday.

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, MoS for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said the PLI schemes, launched with an approved financial outlay of Rs 1.91 lakh crore.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) acts as the nodal agency for coordinating and monitoring the schemes, while their implementation is handled by the respective ministries.

Exports under the PLI programme have risen sharply over the last three years, increasing from Rs 4 lakh crore in FY24 to Rs 6.5 lakh crore in FY25 and further to Rs 15.2 lakh crore in FY26, reflecting India's growing integration with global value chains.

Among the 14 sectors covered under the scheme, high-efficiency solar photovoltaic (PV) modules attracted the highest cumulative investment of Rs 64,873 crore, followed by pharmaceuticals at Rs 45,158 crore and automobiles and auto components at Rs 44,326 crore.

Speciality steel received investments of Rs 23,896 crore, while large-scale electronics manufacturing attracted Rs 20,580 crore.

The government also highlighted the impact of the scheme on electronics manufacturing, saying mobile phone production has increased around 2.4 times since the launch of the PLI programme.

Nearly 99.2 per cent of mobile phones sold in India are now manufactured domestically, while imports have declined by about 77 per cent.

The government said implementation of the PLI schemes is reviewed periodically by the Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS), chaired by the Cabinet Secretary, as well as by the concerned ministries.

Agartala, July 21: The Tripura government, on Tuesday, assigned the additional charge of Director General of Police (Head of Police Force) to senior IPS officer G S Rao following the death of DGP Anurag Dhankar, even as Rao said no Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted so far to probe the circumstances leading to the officer's death.

Speaking to the press after a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tripura Police Headquarters, the newly appointed DGP-in-charge said an investigation into the case is already underway.

"The investigation has started. The police have been doing its job to ascertain the facts behind the incident," Rao said.

Asked whether an SIT would be formed to investigate the case, he said, "So far, no special team has been formed. But, it is certainly a better way to approach the case."

According to an order issued by the General Administration (Personnel and Training) Department, Rao, a 1999-batch IPS officer of the Tripura cadre who is currently serving as Additional Director General of Police (Armed Police), has been given the additional charge of DGP (Head of Police Force) with immediate effect until further orders.

The order stated that Rao, being the senior-most IPS officer currently serving in the state following Dhankar's demise, has been entrusted with the responsibility of heading the Tripura Police on an interim basis.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Manik Saha paid his last respects to Dhankar at the Civil Secretariat and said the state government would ensure that the investigation into the IPS officer's death is carried out in accordance with the law.

Speaking to the press after the ceremony, Saha said preliminary report indicated death by hanging, while the final report is awaited.

"He was inside the bathroom. We waited for the forensic team to arrive. In the absence of a forensic team, the hanging body should not be brought down. The forensic team took control of the situation," the Chief Minister said.

"As per law, an investigation will be conducted. A police case has also been registered," he added, adding that the government's immediate priority was to stand by the bereaved family.

The Chief Minister described Dhankar as a highly capable police officer and credited him with strengthening the state's law-and-order situation.

"I had full faith in him. I was totally relaxed when it came to the question of law and order because of his presence. His achievements in his professional career are appreciated by all," Saha said.

Recalling his last interaction with the officer, the Chief Minister said the two had attended the Tripura Police passing-out parade on July 18 and discussed several issues.

"Our sympathies and condolences are with the grieving family," he said.

However, the Chief Minister declined to comment on allegations made by opposition parties regarding the incident.

The mortal remains of the 1994-batch IPS officer will be flown to his native place in Uttar Pradesh for the last rites. According to Tripura Police, the funeral will be held at 9 am on July 22 at Gandhi Road in Baraut, Baghpat district.

Several senior police officers, including IG (Law and Order) Manchak Ipper, SP (Traffic) Kanta Jangir and the Commandant of the TSR 2nd Battalion, are expected to attend the last rites.

New Delhi, July 21:  India's domestic aviation market registered steady growth during the first half of 2026, with airlines carrying 864.04 lakh passengers between January and June, up 1.44 per cent year-on-year, according to data released by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Domestic passenger traffic rose 1.44 per cent from 851.74 lakh passengers carried during the corresponding period last year, according to the data.

However, passenger movement eased in June as domestic airlines flew 134.64 lakh passengers, down from 136.04 lakh in May.

The sequential decline of 1.03 per cent suggests some moderation in travel demand as the sector entered the second half of the year.

IndiGo continued to dominate India's domestic aviation market during the January-June period, carrying 555.83 lakh passengers and commanding a market share of 64.3 per cent.

The Air India Group remained the second-largest player, transporting 221.67 lakh passengers and accounting for a 25.7 per cent market share.

Together, the two airline groups handled more than 90 per cent of all domestic passenger traffic during the six-month period.

Among other carriers, Akasa Air transported 47.42 lakh passengers, capturing a 5.5 per cent market share, while SpiceJet flew 28.10 lakh passengers, accounting for 3.3 per cent of the market.

Regional carriers continued to account for a relatively small share of passenger traffic. Star Air carried 5.03 lakh passengers with a 0.6 per cent market share, while Alliance Air transported 3.47 lakh passengers, representing 0.4 per cent of the market.

Fly91 carried 2.41 lakh passengers, or 0.3 per cent of the market, while IndiaOne Air flew around 0.10 lakh passengers during the period.

The ministry's data also showed varying levels of capacity utilisation among airlines in June. Akasa Air reported the highest passenger load factor at 92.2 per cent, indicating that more than nine out of every 10 available seats were occupied.

SpiceJet followed with a load factor of 87.8 per cent, while the Air India Group and IndiGo recorded load factors of 85.5 per cent and 85.1 per cent, respectively.

Star Air posted a load factor of 75 per cent, followed by Fly91 at 73.2 per cent. Alliance Air and IndiaOne Air reported load factors of 61.7 per cent and 59.3 per cent, respectively.

Passenger load factor is a key measure of airline capacity utilisation and reflects the proportion of available seats occupied by travellers.

New Delhi, July 21: A day after fierce protest and clash during the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) "Sansad Chalo" march, Delhi High Court, on Tuesday, declined to urgently hear a petition alleging excessive use of force by Delhi Police against students.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia refused a request for an immediate hearing after the matter was mentioned before the court, directing that the petition be listed on Wednesday.

"Don't drag the court into all this," the bench remarked, while declining the plea for urgent listing.

The petition alleged that Delhi Police used excessive force against students participating in Monday's march to Parliament, which was organised to protest alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and demand reforms in the examination system.

The court proceedings came amid heightened political and administrative activity following the clashes.

Union Health Minister J P Nadda visited Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital and Lady Hardinge Hospital to assess the condition of those injured during the demonstration.

According to sources, Nadda reviewed the treatment and medical facilities being provided to the injured protesters. Hospital authorities informed the minister that all those admitted were under medical supervision and receiving necessary care.

The visit followed Nadda's meeting on Monday with two representatives of the CJP, during which he reportedly assured them that the government would "internally discuss" the organisation's demands and there will be "no further crackdown".

Meanwhile, Delhi Police have reportedly registered four FIRs against alleged troublemakers so far, while two more are being prepared in connection with incidents of violence, vandalism and other offences linked to the march.

The cases have been registered at Parliament Street, Connaught Place and other police stations under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Arms Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.

According to Delhi Police, around 60 protesters sustained injuries during the clashes. The force also claimed that more than 118 police personnel, including several senior officers, were injured while attempting to control the situation.

Police said around 70 protesters were detained after clashes broke out when demonstrators tried to proceed towards Parliament despite restrictions in place.

The CJP, however, has accused Delhi Police of using excessive force to disperse the protesters.

The organisation alleged that several students were injured during the action and claimed that activist Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, was manhandled by police personnel.

Delhi Police rejected the allegation, describing reports that Angmo was assaulted during the protest as "completely false and misleading".

The developments came a day after thousands of students, youth activists and supporters joined the CJP's "Sansad Chalo" march in the national capital, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and seeking accountability over alleged examination paper leaks and reforms in the country's examination system.

Guwahati, July 21:  Assam’s acclaimed filmmaker Dr Bobby Sarma Baruah's Assamese feature film Rador Pakhi (Morning Sunshine) has won the Jury Special Mention -- Super Mama Award at the International Film Festival Made by Women in Moscow.

The film was officially selected in the Competition Section of the festival, held in the Russian capital from July 8 to 12.

Inspired by the real-life story of writer Sarmistha Pritam, Rador Pakhi follows the life of Jyoti, an aspiring writer from Assam who is diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy at a young age. Despite severe physical challenges, Jyoti's determination to live independently and pursue her literary aspirations forms the emotional core of the film.

Expressing her happiness over the recognition, director Dr Bobby Sarma Baruah described the honour as a proud moment for the entire team. "This journey became even more meaningful as our film received the Jury Special Mention – Super Mama Award. Kabul, July 21:  At least 20 people have been killed and over 80 others injured due to floods in Parun city of Afghanistan's Nuristan province, local media reported on Tuesday.

Highlighting a statement released by Taliban authorities, Afghanistan's Khaama Press news agency reported that more than 100 people still remain missing after floods in Parun and nearby areas.

In a statement, the Taliban-run National Disaster Management Authority said that heavy floods had impacted Parun and several other areas of Nuristan, causing significant casualties and damage.

The National Disaster Management Authority's head of information and publications and spokesperson, Hafiz Mohammad Yousuf Hamad, said specialised teams had been rushed to the impacted areas to analyse the situation, search for missing people and find the extent of the damage.

Residential homes, agricultural land and shops were damaged or destroyed due to floods, causing heavy financial losses. Hamad said the casualty figures could change as search and rescue operations continue in the flood-affected areas.

With over 100 people reported missing, the authorities fear that the death toll could rise as rescue teams continue to conduct search for survivors and those who may have been swept away by the floods, Khaama Press reported.

The floods were reported after heavy rainfall in parts of Nuristan, where mountainous area and limited road access could make it difficult to carry out rescue operations.

Afghanistan is highly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions, including landslides, droughts and floods.

In May, six people were killed and 11 others injured after strong winds and thunderstorms struck Afghanistan's provinces of Kandahar, Herat, Ghor and Takhar.

According to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority (ANDMA), roads, wells, agricultural land, trees and hundreds of solar panels were destroyed due to strong winds and thunderstorms, Afghanistan-based Tolo News reported.

ANDMA spokesman Mohammad Yousuf Hamad said, "Six people were killed and 11 others injured due to thunderstorms, lightning, storms and floods in Kandahar, Herat, Takhar and Ghor provinces. 20 houses were completely destroyed and 10 others were partially damaged."

New Delhi, July 22: They travelled from Assam, or stepped out of their hostels and campuses in Delhi, armed with placards, slogans and the hope that their voices would help restore accountability to India's examination system.

They returned with bruises, missing belongings and haunting memories of a protest they say descended into chaos.

For several Assamese youth who joined the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) "Sansad Chalo" march demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged NEET paper leak and examination irregularities, Monday's demonstration became an experience they never imagined.

What began as a peaceful march, marked by slogans and placards, turned tense after police moved to stop thousands of protesters from advancing towards Parliament.

Baton charges, tear gas and the ensuing panic left many scrambling for safety as confusion spread through the crowd.

"I'm speechless. I saw people bleeding, being carried away. There was a stampede in my section of the march after the police started hitting people with lathis and threatening us with tear gas," recalled one Assamese student, who requested anonymity.

"I lost my bag, phone and bank cards, but thankfully I made it out safe," the student said, still visibly shaken after leaving the protest site.

Another participant, Amiya Sinha, who had travelled from Assam to join the march in solidarity with students demanding reforms, said he considered himself fortunate despite sustaining injuries.

"I got hit on my bones, but I'm still lucky because they only hit me, and I managed to get out before things got worse. I saw people who'd been hit on the head, lying in the crowd, bleeding," he said.

He also alleged that he witnessed a woman carrying a toddler being pushed into a barricade by a police officer during the commotion.

A third Assamese participant described scenes of panic after police allegedly fired tear gas shells and blocked escape routes.

"We knew this was coming, but I wasn't prepared for what I actually experienced. They fired tear gas shells into the crowd and blocked off all the exits. We were running around trying to escape, but there was nowhere to go," the participant said, requesting anonymity.

"There were kids, maybe sixteen or seventeen years old, being assaulted. It was like someone had thrown a stone into a beehive. But I hope this brings some change. I'll try to show up again," the participant added.

For the Assamese youth who spoke to The Assam Tribune, the journey to Delhi was never about party politics.

Some had travelled from Assam specifically to join the march, while others were already in the national capital pursuing their studies.

They said they participated out of solidarity with students whose futures they believed had been jeopardised by alleged failures in the examination system.

Despite the traumatic experience, none said they regretted joining the protest. Instead, they returned with a renewed conviction that sustained public pressure was necessary to push for reforms, even as they struggled to come to terms with the violence they said they had witnessed.

The accounts from the Assamese participants contrast with the official version put forward by Delhi Police.

According to police, around 60 protesters sustained injuries during the clashes. The force also claimed that more than 118 police personnel, including several senior officers, were injured while attempting to control the situation.

Police said around 70 protesters were detained after clashes broke out when demonstrators allegedly attempted to march towards Parliament despite prohibitory restrictions in force.

The protest has since triggered a political and legal row. The CJP has accused Delhi Police of using excessive force against demonstrators, allegations that the police have denied.

On Tuesday, the Delhi High Court declined to urgently hear a petition alleging excessive use of force by police, listing the matter for hearing on Wednesday. Police have also registered multiple FIRs in connection with the violence during the march.

For the Assamese youth, the headlines and political fallout mattered less than the memories they carried home. They joined the march seeking accountability and a fairer education system, but left with bruises, fear and stories of chaos.

Yet, despite the trauma, their resolve remains unshaken. They believe the sacrifices made on the streets must translate into meaningful reforms

Ahmedabad, July 21:  Three days after the deadly blast at an alleged illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Ahmedabad's Ramol area, Gujarat Police have seized a massive stock of illegal firecrackers worth over Rs 39.57 crore from two warehouses in the city, as authorities intensify enforcement against unsafe storage and handling of explosives across the district.

According to Changodar Police, officers were patrolling the Matoda beat area on Sunday when they received credible intelligence about suspected illegal storage of firecrackers.

Acting on the information, police conducted a search operation in the presence of independent witnesses at a warehouse operated under the name 'Abika Trade Link' on the road connecting Modasar crossroads and Amathapura village.

The search uncovered two opposite-facing warehouses, each measuring about 70 by 25 metres, packed with 65,954 cartons of various types of firecrackers with an estimated value of Rs 39,57,90,000.

Police said fire extinguishers, sand buckets and fire-water pipes were available near the entrance, but the overall fire safety arrangements were inadequate considering the quantity of explosives stored.

Officers found no water sprinkler system in the warehouses.

They also found cartons of firecrackers stacked outside the approved storage area under a sheet-roofed shed, with a thick cloth covering the front, creating what police described as a "serious risk" to human life, neighbouring residents and nearby property in the event of a fire or explosion.

Two people have been named in the case. The first is Amitkumar Modi, a resident of Satyagrah Society opposite Satellite Police Station in Ahmedabad city, who police identified as the licence holder and the person responsible for the business.

The second is Kishan Patel, 29, of Dahegamda village in Bavla taluka, who was present at the premises and is alleged to have managed the warehouse and supervised the stock.

A case has been registered under Sections 125 and 288 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, along with Sections 9B(1)(b) and 12 of the Explosives Act, 1884, and the applicable provisions of the Explosives Rules, 2008.

Police said the investigation is continuing to determine the legal status of the firm, identify other responsible persons, verify the validity of licences, examine approved storage capacity and building plans, and assess compliance with mandatory safety conditions.

Additional legal provisions may be invoked depending on the evidence gathered during the investigation.

The seizure comes amid a wider crackdown on illegal firecracker manufacturing and storage following the explosion at an alleged illegal firecracker unit in Ahmedabad's Ramol area on Saturday afternoon.

The blast killed at least 10 people, including three children, after another victim succumbed to burn injuries on Monday.

Three accused have been arrested in that case, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the incident.

Fire and civic authorities have also launched district-wide inspections, sealing industrial units and issuing notices where serious fire safety violations have been detected.

Police also warned licence holders to renew licences on time, restrict storage to approved locations and quantities, maintain functioning fire safety systems in accordance with PESO, fire department and local authority requirements, avoid storing firecrackers in unauthorised sheds or temporary structures, maintain proper stock and transport records, and ensure that only trained personnel handle explosive materials.

Authorities said violations of licence or safety conditions could result in criminal prosecution, suspension or cancellation of licences and confiscation of the seized stock.

Hyderabad, July 21:  A history-sheeter was hacked to death in Meerpet area of Hyderabad on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

Nandanavanam Suri, who was an accused in several cases including murders, was attacked near TKR College when he came there to attend the birthday celebrations of brother of his second wife.

The attacker sprayed pepper into Suri’s eyes before stabbing him repeatedly with a knife.

Suri suffered serious injuries. Locals shifted him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.

The history sheeter was an accused in the murder of his first wife and brother-in-law Salman. Police suspect that he was stabbed to death by Afroz, brother of Salman.

According to police, the murder appears to be the fallout of a long-standing family feud. The cops alleged that Afroz was reportedly waiting for an opportunity to avenge the killing of his brother.

Afroz had allegedly planned the killing in advance, they suspect. When Suri came to Meerpet area to attend the birthday party, Afroz with the help of some others executed his plan, the police suspects.

Suri had many cases in Warangal, Hyderabad and Malkajgiri police commissionerates.

Hyderabad police had also imposed a city externment order against due to his criminal background.

Meerpet police registered the case and took up investigation. Police were probing the reasons for Suri’s killing.

Meanwhile, a human skeleton was found in Bowenpalli area in Secunderabad on Tuesday.

Locals found skull and bones in bushes near a dairy farm and alerted the police. The skeletal remains were shifted to the Gandhi Hospital for DNA test.

Police believe that the person may have died five years ago. Police registered a case and took up investigation.

Earlier, in another incident in Khammam district of Telangana, a 35-year-old woman sustained stab injuries after her husband allegedly attacked her with a knife while she was lodging a complaint against him at a police station.

Police personnel immediately overpowered the accused and seized the knife. The incident occurred at Enkoor police station on Monday.

New Delhi, July 21: The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, issued notices to the Centre, the Assam government and other respondents on a petition seeking the immediate initiation of the long-pending appeal process for over 19 lakh people excluded from the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) published in Assam in 2019.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi was hearing a petition filed by the Assam State Jamiat Ulama.

During the hearing, counsel for the petitioner submitted that those excluded from the final NRC have been left in limbo as the statutory appeal mechanism has not yet been made operational.

"There is a provision for filing appeals for those excluded from the NRC, but nothing has happened so far. People continue to suffer because the appeal process has not been initiated," the petitioner's counsel told the court.

Taking note of the submissions, the bench issued notices to the Centre, the Assam government, and the Office of the State NRC Coordinator and tagged the matter with another pending petition raising similar issues.

The petition seeks directions to the authorities to immediately commence the appeal process for all individuals excluded from the final NRC so that they can challenge their exclusion before the designated appellate forum.

In addition, the petitioner has sought directions to the authorities to issue National Identity Cards to all persons whose names were included in the final NRC, in accordance with Section 14A of the Citizenship Act, 1955, read with Rule 13 of the Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue of National Identity Cards) Rules, 2003.

The final updated NRC for Assam, aimed at identifying genuine Indian citizens in the state, was published on August 31, 2019 following a Supreme Court-monitored exercise.

According to official data, 3,30,27,661 applicants had applied for inclusion in the NRC. Of these, 3,11,21,004 people were included in the final list, while 19,06,657 applicants were excluded.

The Supreme Court will hear the matter along with the connected petition after responses are filed by the respondents.

Earlier, former Assam NRC State Coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah urging the Centre to withhold the publication of Census data for Assam until the National Register of Citizens (NRC) is re-verified.  

In his letter, Sarma claimed the 2019 NRC supplementary list contained significant errors, alleging that many ineligible persons were included while a large number of indigenous people were left out.

He said he had reminded the authorities about these discrepancies and filed a writ petition before the Supreme Court seeking a complete re-verification of the NRC.

Kohima, July 21: The death toll in the devastating flash floods and landslides triggered by incessant rainfall in Nagaland's Mon district rose to nine on Tuesday after five more bodies were recovered, while four people remain missing as search and rescue operations continued in the worst-hit areas.

The NSDMA said five of the fatalities occurred in Shantham Ward of Mon town, where landslides buried several houses.

Four others died in separate rain-related incidents across the district, while search teams continued efforts to trace the four missing persons.

In Naginimora, four people who were swept away by flash floods were rescued. One sustained fractures, while the remaining three suffered minor injuries, officials said.

According to the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), at least 7,460 people have been affected across the state by rain-induced disasters.

Mon district remains the worst hit, accounting for all nine deaths reported so far.

The relentless rainfall has severely disrupted normal life across several districts, damaging infrastructure, agricultural land and public utilities. Authorities cautioned that the extent of destruction is likely to increase as damage assessment is still underway.

Preliminary assessments showed that 64 houses in 93 villages across 10 districts have been damaged by landslides, flash floods and related incidents. Officials said the figures are expected to rise as reports continue to arrive from remote areas.

The disaster has also taken a heavy toll on livestock, with at least 83 animals reported lost across the affected districts. The losses include 15 mithuns, 13 cattle and 53 pigs, according to official estimates.

Shamator district recorded the highest number of affected residents, with nearly 7,000 people from six villages impacted by widespread flooding and landslides.

Giving district-wise details, the NSDMA said 12 villages in Tuensang district were affected, impacting 201 people. In Zunheboto district, around 30 villages were hit by landslides, affecting at least 26 people.

Rescue and relief operations are being carried out by district administrations, disaster response agencies and security personnel despite challenging weather conditions and difficult terrain.

The death toll rose sharply from the initial reports on July 19, when landslides triggered by relentless rainfall struck multiple locations in Mon town, burying houses and trapping residents beneath the debris.

Rescue teams comprising personnel from the district administration, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police and Assam Rifles have been deployed, with heavy rain and unstable slopes continuing to hamper operations.

Officials said search operations would continue until all missing persons are accounted for as Nagaland remains on alert amid forecasts of more rainfall.

Guwahati, July 21: Assam's flood death toll rose to 11 on Tuesday after a man was swept away while fetching drinking water in Sivasagar district, even as the deluge continued to batter the state's worst-hit district, prompting Raijor Dal chief and local MLA Akhil Gogoi to describe the situation as an "unprecedented natural disaster".

The latest victim, Amlan Gogoi, a resident of Betbari village in Sivasagar, was swept away by floodwaters while attempting to collect drinking water. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), more than 3.10 lakh people remained affected by floods across 11 districts as of Tuesday, with Sivasagar accounting for nearly 1.58 lakh of them.

The Dikhow River continues to flow above the extreme flood level, worsening the situation across the district.

As floodwaters continued to engulf fresh areas, local legislator Akhil Gogoi joined rescue operations on Tuesday, visiting several inundated villages by boat and interacting with affected families.

Describing the crisis as unlike the state's recurring annual floods, the Raijor Dal chief said the district's condition was deteriorating as floodwaters from neighbouring Charaideo and Nazira continued to drain into Sivasagar through the Dorika and Disang rivers.

"The situation in Sivasagar is deteriorating rapidly as water from neighbouring Charaideo and Nazira is flowing into the district through the Dorika and Disang rivers, inundating fresh villages," Gogoi told reporters.

The Sivasagar MLA alleged that overtopping and a breach in an embankment along the Dorika River had significantly intensified the flooding.

"Last year, I had raised the embankment on the upper stretch of the Dorika River by nearly one to two metres. However, the floodwaters have overtopped it this year, leading to extensive flooding across the region. The embankment could not withstand the water pressure, and as a result, entire villages have gone under water," he said.

Gogoi said many families, unable to move their vehicles or even step outside their homes, were abandoning their villages and heading towards Sivasagar town carrying only their essential belongings.

"This should not be viewed as another annual flood. It is an unprecedented natural disaster that demands an extraordinary response," he said.

Appealing to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to strengthen rescue and relief operations immediately, Gogoi urged the deployment of additional boats from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

"Rescue operations must be intensified without delay. I have heard that the Chief Minister is likely to visit the affected areas, and I appeal to him to come to Dorikapar and witness the ground reality firsthand," he said.

Seeking enhanced compensation for flood-hit families, Gogoi argued that the devastation far exceeded that caused by a typical monsoon flood.

"Thousands of families have lost their homes, farms, livestock and livelihoods. The standard flood relief assistance of Rs 6,000 to Rs 12,000 will not be sufficient this time," he said.

As per the latest update, more than 3,10,800 people remained affected in 758 villages in Biswanath, Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Tinsukia districts.

Thiruvananthapuram, July 21:  Former Cabinet Secretary K.M. Chandrasekhar has been re-appointed Vice-Chairperson of the Kerala State Planning Board, marking his second stint in the key policy-making body and signaling the V.D. Satheesan government's emphasis on administrative experience and fiscal reforms.

The 78-year-old former top bureaucrat had earlier headed the Planning Board during the Oommen Chandy-led UDF government's 2011-16 tenure, when he played a pivotal role in steering the state's development planning, which included the Kochi Metro and also the Vizhinjam Port.

Chandrasekhar has long been associated with the Congress-led United Democratic Front and returned to the government's policy framework soon after the Satheesan administration assumed office.

He was entrusted with heading the high-level committee that prepared the White Paper on Kerala's finances, a document that sought to present an assessment of the state's fiscal position and laid the foundation for the government's financial reform agenda.

One of India's most distinguished civil servants, Chandrasekhar served as Cabinet Secretary during the second United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government headed by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, capping a career that included several key assignments in both the Centre and Kerala.

New Delhi, July 21:  Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met Speaker Om Birla, along with other Opposition MPs, and demanded a detailed discussion in the Parliament on the NEET-UG paper leak issue and the violent Jantar Mantar protest.

"Met the Hon'ble Lok Sabha Speaker today along with MPs of the Opposition. Our demand is simple: Parliament must have a detailed discussion on the brutality unleashed on students yesterday and on the government's complete lack of accountability for the examination crisis," Gandhi posted on X.

Referring to the violent clashes that erupted on Monday between the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) supporters and the security officials during the 'Sansad Chalo' march, the LoP said, "Students were beaten for asking legitimate questions about their own future. If Parliament cannot discuss the future of India's youth, what is it for?"

"The Opposition will not let this be buried. We will ensure that the students' voice will be heard on the streets, and in Parliament," he added.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha, however, saw its second adjournment of the day on Tuesday as persistent sloganeering and protests by Opposition members continued to disrupt proceedings during the Monsoon Session of Parliament.

Presiding over the House, Sandhya Ray announced the adjournment after repeated appeals to Opposition members to maintain order went unheeded.

Despite several requests from the Chair, members of the Opposition continued raising slogans, forcing the House to be adjourned once again.

This marked the second adjournment of the Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Speaker Om Birla had adjourned the House till noon after repeated disruptions prevented normal proceedings from continuing.

Appealing to members to allow the House to function, Birla said, "Do you not want the House to run?... Everyone will get a chance to raise their issues."

However, the Opposition benches continued their protests and sloganeering, resulting in another disruption of proceedings and eventually leading to the second adjournment.

Before the day's parliamentary business commenced, leaders of the INDIA bloc held a meeting to chalk out their strategy for the day's proceedings.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule and several other Opposition leaders attended the meeting.

The disruptions follow similar scenes witnessed on the opening day of the Monsoon Session on Monday, when repeated adjournments affected proceedings in both Houses of Parliament.

Gangtok, July 21: Rescue operations continued on Tuesday at an under-construction tunnel in Sikkim's Namchi district after a landslide blocked its entrance, with authorities confirming that 10 people, including a worker from Assam, have died in the incident.

"Ten bodies have been recovered till 9.30 am on Tuesday. Seven of the deceased have been identified, while three unidentified bodies have been sent to the District Hospital Singtam and STNM Hospital," Namchi Police said in a statement.

Among the seven identified victims, one was from Assam, four were residents of Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, while one each hailed from Punjab and Dehradun in Uttarakhand. Another deceased was a resident of Namchi, the statement added.

Officials cautioned that the death toll could rise further as search and rescue operations remain underway. Authorities have not yet clarified whether the deceased were among the trapped workers, previously rescued workers, or rescue personnel. Further details are awaited.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang said the tunnel, part of NHPC's Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung in the Jholungey area of Namchi district, caved in after a landslide struck the site on Monday.

"Following the tragic incident at the under-construction tunnel of the NHPC Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project at Samardung, Jholungey, in Namchi district, Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with me to enquire about the situation and the ongoing rescue operations," Tamang said in a social media post.

The collapse also reportedly triggered a suspected gas leak inside the tunnel, significantly hampering rescue efforts and making access to the affected section difficult.

Authorities said hazardous gases and unstable conditions inside the tunnel have remained among the biggest challenges for rescue teams.

Several personnel involved in the operation reportedly experienced dizziness and briefly lost consciousness while attempting to enter the affected stretch.

Officials believe the gas may have emanated from underground rock strata disturbed by the landslide, although its exact nature and source are yet to be determined.

Rescue operations are being carried out by multiple agencies, including the Sikkim Police, Fire and Emergency Services, the district administration and other emergency response units, with assistance from teams from neighbouring West Bengal.

A detailed investigation into the incident is expected once the site is declared safe, while construction activities at the project are likely to remain suspended pending a comprehensive safety assessment.

The Samardung tunnel forms part of NHPC's Teesta Stage VI Hydroelectric Project, one of Sikkim's key hydropower projects.

The latest fatalities came a day after a multi-agency rescue operation successfully evacuated 16 workers trapped inside the tunnel.

Guwahati, July 21: Amid widespread flooding across Upper Assam, the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve, on Tuesday, clarified that it is not facing any flood situation at present, urging people not to be swayed by misleading reports.

Park authorities said continuous rainfall and rising water levels in the Brahmaputra and rivers flowing down from the Karbi Anglong hills have so far affected only four forest camps located in low-lying areas, while the overall condition inside the UNESCO World Heritage Site remains normal.

"There is no flood situation in Kaziranga at present. Four forest camps located in the Agoratoli, Kohora, Bagori and Burapahar ranges have been inundated due to rising water levels. While we remain vigilant, there is no cause for concern at this stage," Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Arun Vignesh told The Assam Tribune.

According to forest officials, the inundation is limited to a few low-lying camp areas where only a few inches of water have accumulated, submerging patches of grass and soil.

They stressed that such seasonal waterlogging should not be mistaken for a full-fledged flood inside the national park.

Vignesh said the park administration reviews the flood situation every six hours and will issue immediate updates if water levels rise significantly or conditions deteriorate.

Officials explained that the flood situation in Kaziranga is assessed based on the extent of inundation across the protected area.

The situation becomes a matter of concern only when 25 to 40 or more forest camps are submerged and around 40 to 50% of the park goes underwater. A severe flood is declared when inundation reaches 70 to 90% of the park, significantly affecting wildlife movement and nearby fringe villages.

The forest department said it has activated precautionary measures in anticipation of rising water levels.

Forest personnel have been deployed to closely monitor animal movement, particularly near National Highway-715, to facilitate the safe passage of wildlife towards the Karbi Anglong hills if required.

Authorities also said all 108 artificial highlands inside the park are ready to provide refuge to animals during any eventuality.

Officials emphasised that annual flooding is a natural ecological process crucial to maintaining Kaziranga's unique grassland ecosystem.

Seasonal inundation covering nearly 50 to 60 per cent of the park helps flush invasive weeds and water hyacinth from wetlands, beels and lakes, improves dissolved oxygen levels in water bodies, and supports aquatic biodiversity.

The park administration said it will continue round-the-clock monitoring of rainfall and river levels and issue regular updates as the monsoon progresses.

Kaziranga, home to the world's largest population of the one-horned rhinoceros and several other endangered species, faces floods almost every monsoon.

In 2025, the park reportedly recorded the death of 159 wild animals during the flood season.

New Delhi, July 21:  India has approved its first vaccine for the prevention of dengue, a major step in strengthening the country's response to one of its fastest-growing mosquito-borne diseases, an official statement said on Tuesday.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) -- under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare -- has granted marketing authorisation for Qdenga, a live, attenuated tetravalent dengue vaccine developed by Takeda GmbH, Germany.

The vaccine will be imported into the country by Takeda Biopharmaceuticals India Pvt. Ltd.

The approval follows a comprehensive scientific evaluation of the vaccine's quality, safety and efficacy under the provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, and the Drugs Rules, 1945.

Qdenga is a live, attenuated tetravalent vaccine developed using recombinant DNA technology and it is designed to protect against all four dengue virus serotypes, which are responsible for causing the disease.

The vaccine is supplied as a freeze-dried powder for reconstitution and is administered as a subcutaneous injection.

The vaccine has been approved for people aged 4 to 60 years. The recommended immunisation schedule consists of two doses of 0.5 ml each, administered three months apart.

According to the Health Ministry, the approval is backed by data from an extensive global clinical development programme assessing the vaccine's safety, immunogenicity and efficacy in both dengue-endemic and non-endemic countries.

Clinical studies were conducted in participants across more than eight countries, including Brazil, Thailand and Sri Lanka. The regulatory review also included findings from a pivotal Phase III study conducted in India involving people aged 4 to 60 years.

Qdenga has already received regulatory approval in 42 countries, including the European Union, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. It has also received World Health Organization (WHO) prequalification.

More than 24 million doses have been distributed globally.

According to the ministry, post-marketing surveillance has demonstrated a favourable safety profile, with no significant safety concerns reported.

As per officials, the vaccine is expected to complement existing measures such as vector control, disease surveillance, early diagnosis and case management under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme.

However, the ministry emphasised that vaccination is intended to strengthen—not replace, ongoing dengue prevention efforts, including eliminating mosquito breeding sites and promoting personal protective measures.

According to the government, the approval reflects its commitment to ensuring timely access to safe, effective and quality-assured vaccines through a robust, science-based regulatory framework.

New Delhi, Jul 21: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, said the Centre had taken strong action against those involved in the NEET paper leak to ensure that no one "plays with the future of the youth", while calling for a coordinated effort between the Centre and states to curb examination fraud.

Addressing a meeting of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) MPs, titled Mangal Milan, Modi said those found involved in the paper leak racket had been arrested and sent to jail.

He also stressed the need for the strictest possible punishment for those responsible so that such incidents do not recur.

According to Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, who briefed the press after the hour-long meeting, the Prime Minister said the government acted immediately after reports of the paper leak surfaced, leading to the arrest and imprisonment of 13 accused.

"The Prime Minister said strong action has been taken to ensure that no one plays with the future of youth," Rijiju said.

He added that Modi highlighted the government's efforts to safeguard students' academic interests by prioritising the NEET re-examination, which was conducted successfully, with the results declared without delay.

"At the same time, the Prime Minister said, to ensure that students' future was not affected, the NEET re-examination was given priority, conducted successfully, and the results were declared without delay," Rijiju said.

The Prime Minister also underlined that measures had been put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future and called for bipartisan cooperation to combat paper leak rackets.

"The Prime Minister said that to ensure that no future paper leaks take place, all state governments and the Centre must join hands irrespective of party. This is not a matter of party politics but a matter of national interest," Rijiju said.

Modi also reportedly told the NDA MPs that the government would pursue the strongest possible legal action against those involved, with the support of the country's top lawyers, to ensure exemplary punishment for offenders.

The Prime Minister's remarks came a day after thousands of students, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), marched to Parliament under the banner of the "Sansad Chalo" protest, demanding action over alleged irregularities in the NEET examination and seeking the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

New Delhi, July 21:  Lionel Messi has described his "immense" pain after Argentina's 1-0 loss to Spain in the World Cup final, saying only time would help the team overcome the result.

Ferran Torres' extra-time goal in New Jersey ended Argentina's hopes of back-to-back titles on Sunday and denied Messi a chance to cap his decorated career with a second World Cup title.

The 39-year-old is not expected to play at the next World Cup in 2030, although he is yet to announce any retirement plans.

"The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. But I also hold onto all the good things," Messi wrote on social media.

"The matches we turned around by giving it our all - moments that will remain in our memories forever - and the support of an entire country which, combined with this group's hard work and effort, brought us back among the world's elite once again."

Argentina cruised through the group stage before relying on late goals in its next four knockout games to progress to the final.

Guwahati, July 21: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), on Tuesday, announced additional special trains for passengers stranded by flood-related disruption in Upper Assam, even as train services on key sections in Sivasagar district remained suspended for the second consecutive day.

The move follows severe flooding in and around Simaluguri town, which has forced the suspension of train operations on the Simaluguri-Namtiali and Simaluguri-Selenghat sections under the Tinsukia Division.

The disruption has led to the cancellation, short-termination and diversion of several passenger services.

To assist affected passengers, NFR has introduced a one-way special train (No. 05934) from Mariani to New Tinsukia via Guwahati, Rangiya and North Lakhimpur.

The train departed Mariani at 12.15 am on Tuesday and is scheduled to reach New Tinsukia at 9 pm after halting at Furkating, Barpathar, Sarupathar, Dimapur, Diphu, Lumding, Lanka, Hojai, Kampur, Chaparmukh, Guwahati, Kamakhya, Rangiya, Tangla, Udalguri, New Misamari, Rangapara North, Biswanath Chariali, Harmuti, North Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, New Sisiborgaon and Dibrugarh.

NFR has also introduced two pairs of special trains between Lumding and Mariani. Train No. 07641 departed Lumding at 8.30 am on Tuesday for Mariani, while the return service, Train No. 07642, will leave Mariani at 2 pm the same day.

Another pair comprises Train No. 07643, which will depart Lumding at 8 pm on Tuesday, and Train No. 07644, scheduled to leave Mariani at 1.30 am on Wednesday. All four trains will halt at every station along the route.

Another pair of special trains has been introduced between Rangiya and Mariani. Train No. 05831 will depart Mariani at 6 pm on Tuesday for Rangiya, while Train No. 05832 will leave Rangiya at 7.20 am and reach Mariani shortly after midnight.

According to NFR, several long-distance trains to and from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia are being diverted via the Rangiya-Rangapara-Dibrugarh route, while certain services have been cancelled or short-terminated in the interest of passenger safety and operational requirements.

NFR Chief Public Relations Officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said the additional special trains would continue to operate till Friday.

"These special additional trains will run till next Friday and are expected to provide significant relief to stranded passengers. Moreover, regular services of some other express trains are also being operated between the Mariani-Guwahati section," Sharma said.

The disruption began on Monday after the overflowing Dikhow River inundated the Simaluguri station yard, railway tracks, railway colony and adjoining areas, forcing NFR to suspend train movement on the affected sections on safety grounds.

Hundreds of passengers were stranded at Lumding Junction as services were affected.

Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in World Cup final in New Jersey, with Ferran Torres scoring the winner to cap a dominant performance.

The team arrived back in Madrid at around 1 p.m. local time and began the celebrations with official receptions hosted by King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, both of whom had attended the final at New York New Jersey Stadium. The king praised the unity of the team. reports Xinhua.

The players then boarded an open-top bus at the Moncloa Palace, the prime minister's official residence, and travelled through the heart of Madrid, where an estimated 1.8 million fans lined the streets.

The bus reached Plaza de Cibeles at 10 p.m., where another 120,000 supporters had been waiting for hours after being entertained by performances from several Spanish pop stars.

The celebrations were overshadowed by tragedy Sunday night. A 13-year-old fan died in the town of Ciudad Rodrigo after being struck by part of a fountain where people were celebrating. Britain's Labour Party earlier on Friday announced that Andy Burnham has been confirmed as its leader.

Burnham, former Mayor of Greater Manchester, took charge as the Prime Minister after Keir Starmer formally stepped down, in accordance with established procedure.

Speaking at the Trades Union Congress headquarters in central London, British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who also chairs Labour's National Executive Committee, said Burnham had received nominations from 379 Labour lawmakers. As the only candidate to reach the required threshold, he was declared leader without a ballot of party members.

Burnham returned to parliament after winning the Makerfield by-election, whose result was declared on June 19. Starmer announced his resignation as Labour leader on June 22, saying he would remain Prime Minister until his successor was chosen.

In his speech, Burnham recalled working with Keir Starmer about a decade ago to draft the original version of the Hillsborough law following the second Hillsborough inquest, drawing on Starmer's legal expertise.

Burnham said Britain had taken a series of wrong turns since the 1980s, as political power became increasingly centralised while essential services such as housing, water, energy and transport were privatised.

He argued that this had driven up costs, concentrated wealth and power in fewer hands and left many former industrial towns without the authority to rebuild their economies.

"I will be a leader for the north, the south, the east and the west," he said.

After having led the Labour Party to a massive election win in July 2024, the first in 14 years, Starmer faced criticism for the policies adopted by his government.

New York, July 21:  The heightened tensions over confrontations with immigration enforcement officers have taken a dangerous turn with an ex-Army man launching a fiery attack on the agency’s office here.

Outside the federal building housing the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and various government agencies, the man poured petrol, lit it, set off fireworks and fired shots on Monday, injuring three people, authorities said.

It followed the shooting deaths of two people during traffic stops by ICE agents this month and the death of another man who was killed by a truck when he was fleeing the agency officers last week.

Wheeling a cart with a poster, "ICE Off Our Streets”, Andrew Arrabaca, 43, who had worked on the Patriot missile system when he was in the Army, carried out the attack shortly before the offices were to open, police said.

He was arrested immediately after the incident, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which has offices in the building.

"Mr. Arrabaca came armed, with bad intentions," FBI Assistant Director James Barnacle said. "He did say he was targeting the building and did say he was OK if he hurt people".

The fire was put out before it could reach the building, and he was subdued before he could use the axes, hammer and machete he had with him, according to officials.

They also recovered two air rifles, and Barnacle said he had fired some pellets.

The FBI said that a man waiting to enter the building for an interview in the immigration office there was injured, as were two police officers who tried to subdue the attacker.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who has been a critic of President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown and had declared that the city would not cooperate with enforcement against illegal migrants, said, "We will support the federal investigation".

He added that he would “hold accountable anyone who threatens the safety of people".

The building, which also houses a jail to temporarily hold those arrested on immigration-related charges, has been the target of protests.

On July 7, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican, was killed when his vehicle was fired upon by an ICE agent who said that he had tried to run him down in Houston, Texas.

A Colombian citizen, Sebastián Durán Guerrero, was killed in Biddeford, Maine, under similar circumstances on July 13.

The next day, Juan Jairo Coronilla Duran, a Mexican visiting the US on a tourist visa, died when he fled into traffic in Florida after ICE agents confronted him and other men.

Officials accused the two men who were shot of “weaponising” vehicles against ICE agents.

Emotions have run high over these incidents, when there were already several protests against immigration enforcement.

Last week, Acting Assistant Homeland Secretary Lauren Bis accused Democrats and activists of spreading "dangerous smears and hoaxes” against ICE.

She called on them “and the media to turn the temperature down and stop calling for violence and resistance against ICE law enforcement”.

Democrat Representative Pramila Jayapal has led a campaign to demand an independent inquiry into the two shooting incidents.

“We are calling for immediate independent investigations into both of these deaths, without interference”, her letter, cosigned by 197 Democratic members of Congress, demanded from the Trump administration.

Democratic Party’s Senate Leader Chuck Schumer asserted in a harsh statement, “The Trump administration rushed 12,000 agents onto our streets without ensuring they were fit to carry a badge and a gun”.

Homeland Security officials temporarily suspended traffic stops by ICE agents last week, but Trump countermanded the order.

Defending the ICE officers, he wrote on Truth Social, “We must be tough, strong, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP”!

Mysuru, July 21:  Three persons have been arrested in connection with the alleged gang-rape of a young woman from West Bengal in Karnataka's Mysuru district, police said on Tuesday.

However, authorities added that they are still verifying the facts of the case and the allegations made by the victim as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident was reported under the jurisdiction of the T. Narasipura Town Police Station in Mysuru district. According to the complaint, the victim alleged that she was forcibly taken to a lodge by the accused, where they sexually assaulted her.

The accused have been identified as Kiran, Kishore and Riyan.

In her complaint, the woman stated that she was forcibly taken in a car by the accused while she was standing at the T. Narasipura private bus stand two days ago. She further alleged that the accused took her to a lodge in Santemarahalli town, where they gang-raped her.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the police arrested all three accused within 24 hours. They were subsequently produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.

Police officials said that, considering the sensitivity of the matter and concerns relating to women's safety, immediate action was taken to apprehend the accused. At the same time, investigators are examining all aspects of the case, including whether the victim had accompanied the accused voluntarily.

According to the police, the accused have claimed that the woman had accompanied them of her own accord. They further alleged that an argument broke out at the lodge over the recording of a video. Following the altercation, they claimed to have dropped the woman back at her location, after which she lodged a complaint alleging gang-rape.

Police said they are also verifying the victim's background and examining the statements of the accused to establish the facts of the case. Further investigation is underway.

However, the authorities are concerned about the development as Mysuru city is one of the major tourist destinations in the state, which attracts people from across the globe. The authorities have already started preparations for grand Dasara celebrations.

It can be recalled that a 10-year-old child was sexually assaulted and brutally murdered near Mysuru Palace on October 10, 2025. The victim's family, along with about 50 others from the Hakki Pikki nomadic tribe community, had travelled from Kalaburagi to Mysuru for the Dasara festival to sell balloons and toys. They were camping near the Palace grounds and selling goods at different locations in the city. Mysuru Police launched a manhunt for the suspect and arrested Karthik from Kollegal. He allegedly attempted to flee during the arrest, forcing police to shoot him in the leg before taking him into custody.

Jorhat, July 21: As Upper Assam reels under one of its worst flood crises in recent years, the Indian Army has rescued more than 200 stranded civilians under Operation Jal Rahat, while the death toll in the current wave of floods has climbed to 10 and over 3.65 lakh people have been affected across 16 districts of the State.

According to the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), 45 revenue circles across 16 districts have been affected, with Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat emerging as the worst-hit districts. More than 10,362 hectares of crop area remain submerged.

In response to the crisis, the Indian Army intensified relief efforts under Operation Jal Rahat.

On the requisition of the civil administration, four Flood Relief Columns of the Red Shield Division under the Spear Corps were deployed on July 20 in the flood-hit districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat.

The Army columns are operating in Nazira and Amguri in Sivasagar district, Sonari in Charaideo district, and several affected areas of Jorhat district. Supported by troops from formations under the Spear Corps, the teams are equipped with rescue boats, medical personnel, engineering resources and relief supplies.

Army personnel have evacuated stranded residents, including families trapped in inundated localities, and are providing emergency medical assistance and relief materials to affected communities.

To enhance situational awareness and optimise rescue operations, helicopter reconnaissance sorties and drone surveillance are being conducted over flood-hit areas.

Army engineer detachments have also been deployed to assist in restoring connectivity in locations where roads and infrastructure have been damaged by floodwaters.

The operations are being carried out in coordination with district administrations, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other civil agencies. Additional resources have been kept on standby for immediate deployment as the situation evolves.

Meanwhile, the flood-related death toll rose to 10 on Monday, with four deaths reported from Jorhat district and one from Karbi Anglong.

The ASDMA bulletin stated that several major rivers continued to flow above danger levels. The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Neamatighat, while the Burhi Dihing at Khowang, Dikhow at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat and Dhansiri at Numaligarh also remained above red-mark levels.

The worsening flood situation has severely impacted railway operations in eastern Assam. Train services were short-terminated at Mariani, Furkating, Selenghat and Namtiali after floodwaters disrupted rail connectivity through Simaluguri.

According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), severe flooding has inundated the Simaluguri station yard, railway tracks, railway colony and adjoining areas, while water has overtopped railway tracks in the Simaluguri section. Train movement between the Simaluguri–Namtiali and Simaluguri–Selenghat sections has been suspended until further notice.

Several long-distance trains, including the Rajdhani Express services to and from Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, have been diverted via the Rangiya–Rangapara–Dibrugarh route. A number of passenger services have also been cancelled or short-originated.

At least six NDRF teams have been deployed in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts, while two teams are carrying out rescue operations in Jorhat. Additional SDRF teams from other districts have been mobilised to Charaideo, Sivasagar, Jorhat and Golaghat.

Many parts of the State recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, including Mirza (170 mm), Guwahati (140 mm), Bokakhat and Golaghat (130 mm each), Mariani (120 mm), Numaligarh and Gossaigaon (110 mm each), and Jorhat (100 mm). Sonari had recorded 190 mm rainfall on Sunday. While widespread rainfall persisted across Upper Assam over the last three days, weather officials indicated that rainfall activity is likely to decrease across most parts of Assam from Tuesday onward.

ITANAGAR/GANGTOK/KOHIMA, July 21: Arunachal Pradesh’s Congress unit backed the nationwide “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign against examination paper leaks, accusing the Centre of jeopardising the future of students and youths across the country.

In a statement on Monday, Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) spokesperson Johny Yangfo alleged that repeated examination paper leaks had created uncertainty among students and questioned the Centre’s handling of the education system.

He claimed that the issue had affected the future of lakhs of aspirants and called for urgent reforms to restore confidence in the examination process. The Congress leader said the party’s nationwide campaign, led by Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi and party chief Mallikarjun Kharge, aimed to reach out to students and highlight their concerns.

Yangfo said the campaign sought to raise awareness about issues affecting the country’s youth and press for greater accountability.

Alleging that the government had failed to address recurring paper leaks, Yangfo said students continued to suffer due to lapses in the examination system. He also criticised the Union education ministry, claiming that such incidents would continue unless corrective measures were taken.

The leader further referred to the detention of activist Sonam Wangchuk and accused the government of suppressing dissent instead of responding to public concerns.

He claimed that protests against the alleged failures of the government had drawn widespread attention both within the country and abroad.

Expressing concern over reports of students allegedly taking the extreme step following examination-related issues, he urged the government to listen to the voices of the youths and take concrete action to safeguard their future. Meanwhile, thousands of youths on Monday organised a protest rally here in support of Wangchuk and demanded stringent action against alleged examination paper leak scams, calling for greater transparency and accountability in the country’s competitive examination system.

Organised by a youth group, the rally began at Akashdeep, a prominent commercial complex, and concluded at IG Park nearly 2 km away, with participants carrying placards and raising slogans in support of Wangchuk.

The protesters alleged that repeated incidents of leaked examination papers have undermined the credibility of competitive tests and eroded the confidence of students and job aspirants who spend years preparing for them.

As the procession moved through the state capital, participants urged the authorities to ensure free, fair and transparent examinations, saying merit should not be compromised by corruption or malpractice.

The rally concluded peacefully at IG Park, where the protesters reaffirmed their support for Wangchuk’s campaign and vowed to continue their agitation until concrete measures are taken to strengthen the integrity of competitive examinations.

In Gangtok, the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) on Monday staged a demonstration at the Namchi Central Park in support of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

The SDF’s Namchi district committee said the paper leak in the medical entrance test had severely undermined the credibility of one of the country’s most competitive examinations and unfairly affected thousands of students who had spent years preparing for it.

In a statement, the SDF expressed its “unwavering support and solidarity” with students and youth who participated in the Parliament march, demanding a transparent and accountable examination system.

The party also condemned the reported use of tear gas and lathi-charge against protesters in Delhi, alleging that the action was aimed at suppressing students exercising their democratic right to seek accountability.

The SDF urged the Centre to conduct a fair and impartial investigation into the alleged paper leak, bring those responsible to justice and restore public confidence in the examination system.

On the other hand, the Nagaland unit of the Congress on Monday said the party’s nationwide “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign against examination paper leaks will continue till justice is delivered to the affected students.

Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) working president Khriedi Theunuo, addressing reporters at the Congress Bhavan here, accused the government of failing to protect the integrity of the education and recruitment system. “Under the campaign, party workers would create awareness among the public in Nagaland on the issue,” he said.

The Congress is determined to continue exposing failures in the country’s education and examination system “till justice is delivered”, he said.

The “Chhatron Ki Goonj” campaign of the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students’ Union of India was launched by Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on June 17 from Rajasthan’s Kota.

New Delhi, July 21: State-owned NHAI said residents living within a 20-km radius of an eligible toll plaza can purchase a local pass digitally through the Rajmargyatra mobile app, allowing unlimited travel through the respective toll plaza during the month.

Earlier, commuters were required to visit the toll plaza physically and submit supporting documents to establish their eligibility. Under the new digital framework, the entire process can now be digitally completed within a few minutes.

NHAI, in a statement on Monday, said the newly introduced ‘local pass’ feature enables eligible commuters to purchase a toll pass digitally through the Rajmargyatra mobile app without visiting the toll plaza.

The first facility of digital local toll pass has been introduced at the Mundka – Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) in Delhi and will be rolled out at other toll plazas across the country in the coming months, it added.

According to the statement, the initiative leverages consent-based integration with government digital platforms, including DigiLocker and Vahan, to automatically retrieve verified details relating to the commuter’s address, vehicle number and linked FASTag.

Eligibility for a local pass is further established through GIS-based verification, eliminating manual documentation and significantly improving user convenience while ensuring transparency and accuracy.

Further enhancing services for national highway users, NHAI said it has also introduced ‘MargMitra’ Help Centre, an intelligent digital assistance platform integrated within the Rajmargyatra mobile app.

Designed as a single-window interface for national highway users, ‘MargMitra’ will enable commuters to access information, seek assistance and register grievances through an intuitive conversational interface.

The statement said users can type or speak their queries, feedback or grievances in any of the 22 Indian languages, and the platform provides them with appropriate information or guides them to the relevant service. The help centre provides instant assistance on a wide range of services, including FASTag recharge, KYC requirements, refund status, annual and local pass services and other frequently asked queries.

NHAI has been encouraging national highway commuters to download the Rajmargyatra app on Android and iOS platforms and avail the wide range of digital services designed to make National Highway travel safer, smarter and more convenient.

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi draped a Muga silk stole around Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s shoulders during his five-nation tour in May this year, it was far more than an act of diplomatic courtesy.

It was a quiet, golden declaration that nestled within the folds of Assam’s most iconic textile lies a civilisation, an economy, and an ecosystem that the world must not be allowed to forget. The stole was no ordinary gift. Muga silk, also known as the ‘golden silk’ of Assam from the Brahmaputra Valley, is one of the country’s rarest and most prestigious textiles, celebrated for its natural golden sheen produced without artificial dyes.

That such an emblem of sustainability and traditional craftsmanship should reach the leader of a nation whose fashion houses have defined global luxury for centuries is highly significant, with the golden silk resonating with Italy’s own celebrated legacy of refined design.

That diplomatic gesture now has a policy counterpart at home. DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, alongside Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma, recently launched ‘Mission SenehJori’, an Assam government initiative aimed at transforming the State’s renowned Muga silk into a globally recognised luxury brand while strengthening the broader sericulture value chain.

Carrying an outlay of Rs 411 crore, the mission is designed to empower more than 2.5 lakh weavers, rearers, and entrepreneurs connected to the sector. By working across the entire chain, from silkworm rearing to weaving to final branding, it seeks to modernise production, marketing, and branding so that Muga can compete as a premium luxury textile nationally and globally, lifting incomes for rural artisans while preserving a craft unique to the Northeast.

The very name “SenehJori” evokes the love and affection of the people of Assam and is thus a fitting banner for a fibre so bound up with their identity.

But the glow of these moments must not blind us to the shadows gathering around this extraordinary craft. Muga silk is not merely a product of Assam, it is Assam.

The Ahom regime, from 1228 to 1828, can be considered the golden period for Muga culture, when it prospered and became woven into the social and economic life of the Assamese people.

The cultural roots run deep, and so does the economic lifeline Muga provides. Activities such as weaving, winding, sizing, warping and beaming of yarn support nearly 1,85,000 families in Assam, with women forming 65 percent of those making a living from silk rearing and spinning.

Across the State, about 2.32 million people are associated with the Muga trade as farmers, labourers and salespersons. They are mothers and daughters, farmers and weavers, whose daily bread is spun from the cocoon of a silkworm. Assam accounts for nearly 90 percent of India’s Muga silk production, cementing its status as the global hub for this indigenous silk. This is precisely the kind of industry that policy should be racing to protect and expand.

Yet the very ecosystem that births this golden fibre is under assault. Researchers say the root cause of the decline is climate change. Because the worms are reared outdoors, they are vulnerable to variations in atmospheric temperature, and any negative shift in climatic conditions disrupts their life cycle. The consequences for farming families are devastating.

One Muga farmer recounts that he could earlier produce over 30,000 cocoons a year, yielding almost 4 kg of silk; in recent years, his output has fallen to under 18,000, and his income has dropped from roughly Rs 12,000 a year to less than Rs 7,000.

The threat does not stop at temperature. The decline of Som and Soalu plantations, the trees on which Muga silkworms feed, is pushing the silk to the verge of extinction, driven by the expansion of tea gardens and their rampant use of pesticides and insecticides. Meanwhile, of the 106 government Muga farms in Assam, most have been encroached upon and battered by air pollution and the vagaries of weather.

Mission SenehJori’s ambitions must translate into outcomes on the ground. That means genomic research to breed climate-resilient silkworm varieties, aggressive replanting of Som and Soalu trees, pesticide-free buffer zones around sericulture areas, and structured access to premium domestic and export markets. Weavers must be connected to the benefits of GI certification in ways that actually raise incomes, not just burnish branding.

Special schemes should also empower the women weavers who form the backbone of Assam’s silk industry. Both the DoNER Ministry and the Assam government need to sustain these efforts and address the challenges outlined above.

Italy’s luxury houses have kept centuries-old weaving traditions alive through design partnerships and global marketing. India can do the same. The Muga stole that Prime Minister Meloni received could open a conversation with European fashion, but only if the weavers back home in Sualkuchi and Dhemaji are still at their looms to fulfil that promise.

The images are achingly familiar: vehicles stranded axle-deep on Ganeshguri roads, families wading through waist-high water in Beltola, and underpasses at Paltan Bazaar turned overnight into swimming pools. Every June, Guwahati braces itself. Every July, it suffers. Every August, once the waters recede, officials promise to fix the drains, until the next monsoon arrives.

This annual humiliation is not an act of God. It is the result of decades of neglect, unplanned urbanisation, and the absence of a coherent, citywide drainage strategy. The hills that make Guwahati beautiful also make it treacherous: when the monsoon breaks, millions of litres of rainwater rush down simultaneously, overwhelming a stormwater network never designed for a modern city. The water has nowhere to go, so it takes over the streets.

The tragedy is that a solution exists. It has been carefully drawn up, is technically sound, and is achievable in phases. What it lacks is the attention of those in power.

Catch the water before it reaches you

The core insight of the plan, developed under the title Project Flood Free Guwahati, is deceptively simple: do not wait for floodwater to accumulate on streets and then struggle to pump it away. Intercept it at the source, capture it the moment it leaves the hillside, and channel it directly to the Brahmaputra through a purpose-built drainage spine.

This spine would be constructed in seven integrated layers, each addressing a stage of the water’s journey from hilltop to river:

• Catchment drains: Laid along both faces of every hillslope, they intercept rainwater at the toe of the hill – the first point at which runoff turns dangerous before it cascades into residential areas below.

• Stormwater drains: They form a secondary network that collects water from the catchment drains and feeds it into the main disposal corridor, consolidating dispersed flow into one controlled stream.

• Open RCC drainage: Large reinforced-concrete open drains, they form the backbone of the surface waterway, graded to carry peak monsoon discharge without overflow.

• Cut-and-cover tunnels: They serve dense plain areas where open channels are not feasible; built through excavation and backfilled, they leave no permanent surface disruption.

• Tunnels and micro-tunnels with boring machines (TBMs): These are the project’s most transformative element. Where hills and urban population density make surface work impossible, TBMs, the technology used in metro systems, drill through, creating sealed conduits that carry floodwater beneath the city to the Brahmaputra. No hill is an obstacle, and no neighbourhood too dense.

• Syphons and aqueducts: They manage elevation differences within the waterway; aqueducts carry the corridor over roads, railways, and water courses – in effect, a flyover system for water.

• Desilting chambers: Placed at strategic points along the network, they arrest sediment before it can clog the tunnels and drains, and are fitted with mechanised EOT cranes and grab buckets for maintenance, ensuring that the system remains functional for generations.

Together, these seven elements constitute a complete, cradle-to-river flood management system, addressing not just the symptoms of Guwahati’s flooding but its structural cause.

A city divided into three phases

Recognising that a project of this scale must be delivered incrementally, the plan divides Guwahati into three catchment phases. Phase-I covers the northern and central belt: Geetanagar, Noonmati, Narangi, Bamunimaidan, Chandmari, RG Baruah Road, Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Rajgarh, and Bhangagarh. Phase-II addresses the eastern and southern corridors: Satgaon, Six Mile, Khanapara, Beltola, Basistha, Ganeshguri, Hatigaon, Rukminigaon, and Dispur. And Phase-III completes the network, covering Lokhra, Garchuk, Kahilipara, Paltan Bazar, Santipur, Machkhowa, and Fatasil.

Each phase is self-contained and delivers tangible flood relief upon completion, so the city need not wait for the entire project to be completed before residents see results.

The authorities must act

Guwahati is not the first city to face this problem, and it need not be the last to solve it. The technology exists, the engineering precedent is established, and the alignment through Guwahati’s terrain is feasible. What has been missing, until now, is a unified, city-specific blueprint, and that blueprint has been provided.

It is a matter of urgency that the Mayor of Guwahati, the concerned State ministers, and the Chief Minister of Assam direct the relevant departments, including the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the Public Works Department, the Water Resources Department, and the Guwahati Smart City Limited, to commission a formal technical review without delay. The pre-feasibility work is, in effect, already done; what is required now is institutional will. It is expected that this proposal will fulfil the dream of a flood-free Guwahati.

Every monsoon season squandered through inaction represents flooded homes, disrupted livelihoods, damaged public infrastructure, and, too often, the loss of human life. Guwahati’s citizens have tolerated this for long enough. They deserve a city that does not drown.

The engineering solution to a flood-free Guwahati is on the table. The only question is whether those with the authority to act will pick it up.

Guwahati, July 21: Artists, writers, cultural practitioners, and digital content creators working in the Kamrupi dialect came together at Barnagar College, Sorbhog, for a programme that explored the creative and intellectual work being undertaken in the dialect.

The event brought together practitioners from literature, art, culture and digital media to share their experiences of using Kamrupi for serious creative expression. Discussions focused on both the possibilities of working in a non-standardised linguistic variety and the challenges faced when it lacks the cultural legitimacy enjoyed by standard Assamese.

Among the speakers, Dr Amiya Mahanata spoke about her work on compiling a dictionary of words used in the region. YouTube content creator Riki Bharali discussed his efforts to document and promote the traditional food practices of western Assam, particularly those of his own region. He also expressed concern that knowledge of many local dishes and culinary traditions is gradually fading among younger generations.

Cartoonist Nituparna Rajbangshi spoke about representing Kamrupi culture through art, while filmmaker Kangkan Deka discussed his Kamrupi-dialect film Upasarga, saying it demonstrates the potential of the language of lower Assam as a medium for serious cinema. Poets Jugajyoti Das, Ajay Kumar Ray and Ziaul Islam shared their experiences of writing in Kamrupi and publishing their work in magazines.

The programme was organised as part of a project led by Jyotirmoy Talukdar of Ashoka University. The Foundation Project is being implemented by India Foundation for the Arts under its Arts Practice programme with support from HudumDeo.

HudumDeo is a socio-cultural organisation engaged in the research, restoration and dissemination of Assam's folk art, literature and cultural traditions. It also provides a platform for discussions on local art, language, literature and indigenous heritage.

The project seeks to connect a largely unorganised community of Kamrupi speakers whose language has historically remained culturally marginalised. By creating a common platform for artists, writers and researchers, the initiative aims to build confidence among speakers and encourage the use of Kamrupi in both creative work and everyday communication.

Talukdar said the project also seeks to contribute to the ‘declownisation’ of Kamrupi by challenging its frequent portrayal as a language used mainly for comic effect through exaggerated accents, stereotypical characters and caricatures. Such portrayals, he argued, have hindered its recognition as a legitimate medium for literary, artistic and intellectual expression.

The initiative encourages practitioners to represent local experiences in their own language rather than feeling compelled to adopt standard Assamese because of its greater institutional acceptance. Organisers said the growing reach of digital media also offers new opportunities to document, preserve and promote linguistic traditions such as Kamrupi.

Dibrugarh, July 21: Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Ranjit Kumar Dass has signalled the possibility of an increase in the number of Assembly constituencies in the State in the future, saying the proposed new Assembly complex at Dibrugarh is being designed to accommodate up to 200 legislators.

Speaking after inspecting the construction site at Khanikar on Monday and reviewing the master plan for the project, Dass said the enhanced seating capacity is intended to future-proof the Assembly building against any increase in the strength of the House.

“The Assembly currently has 126 members. If the number of constituencies is increased in the future, the new complex should be able to accommodate additional legislators without requiring structural modifications or expansion,” he said.

The Speaker also said the initial proposal to build residential accommodation for 126 legislators is being revised, with the government considering increasing the number of residential units to around 175, in view of future needs.

The new Assembly complex forms the centrepiece of the Assam Government’s plan to develop Dibrugarh as the State’s second capital. The government has sanctioned nearly Rs 284 crore for the project.

Accompanied by State Capital Region Development Authority chairperson and Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, district commissioner Bikram Kairi, senior officials and Public Works department engineers, Dass reviewed the architectural design and infrastructure plan for the complex.

He further said the project would incorporate elements that reflect Dibrugarh’s cultural heritage and architectural identity while also creating dedicated spaces to honour eminent personalities associated with the city. Besides serving as the State’s legislative hub, the complex is also envisioned as a tourist destination.

Expressing optimism about the project’s progress, Dass said he hopes that at least one session of the Assam Legislative Assembly will be held in the new complex within the next three years.

Jorhat, July 20: Assam's flood situation turned grimmer on Monday as three more people, including two teenage girls, lost their lives in Jorhat district, pushing the state's flood-related death toll to seven amid incessant rain and rising river levels.

The worst tragedy unfolded in Titabor, where 14-year-old Susmita Mardha and Chuniya Pahariya of Panbari were swept away by the swollen Doi Jaan (local name for small rivers/streams).

The incident occurred in the morning when three teenage girls were caught in strong current. An immediate search operation managed to save one of them, but the other two could not be rescued.

"The incident happened today and the bodies were recovered within a few hours," an official told The Assam Tribune.

Titabor MLA Dhiraj Gowala visited the bereaved families and termed the incident unprecedented for the area.

"Such flooding is unheard of in Titabor. We, the people here, are not accustomed to such floods. It has been an unprecedented occurrence this year," Gowala said, describing the victims as casualties of a natural disaster.

Later in the day, Tourism Minister Ajanta Neog also visited the flood-hit areas of Titabor to assess the situation.

She reviewed the condition of affected localities and interacted with inmates of relief camps, including the camp at Borhola College, to take stock of their grievances.

In another flood-related tragedy in Jorhat district, 51-year-old Lalit Gogoi of Lukhurakhan village under 12 No. Lahing Gaon Panchayat in Mariani died after being swept away by rising floodwaters.

He was rescued by an SDRF team and rushed to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

With the three latest fatalities, Assam's flood-related death toll has risen to eight. Earlier on Monday, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority's (ASDMA) morning flood bulletin had reported five deaths.

The flood situation across the state deteriorated further during the day, with more than 1.7 lakh people affected in 12 districts.

According to the ASDMA, 580 villages remain inundated, while 10,362.9 hectares of cropland have been damaged.

Several major rivers continued to flow above the danger level. The Brahmaputra was flowing above the danger mark at Neamatighat, while the Buridihing at Khowang, Dikhou at Sivasagar, Disang at Nanglamuraghat and Dhansiri at Numaligarh were also flowing above the danger level at the time of filing this report.

Guwahati, July 20: A pregnant tea garden worker was forced to deliver her baby inside a factory after floodwaters cut off access to medical facilities in Assam's Sivasagar district, as widespread flooding continued to devastate tea estates across Upper Assam, on Monday.

Describing the incident as one of the gravest consequences of the ongoing floods, the Tea Association of India (TAI) on Monday said that as floodwaters made it impossible to reach a medical facility in time.

"In an extraordinary and distressing incident, a pregnant worker delivered a baby inside the factory premises under extremely challenging circumstances as floodwaters made it impossible to reach a medical facility in time,” the association said in a statement.

The association added that another expectant mother, "who was on the verge of delivery, also required urgent medical attention", highlighting the severe humanitarian challenges confronting stranded tea workers.

According to the Assam unit of TAI, Nazira subdivision in Sivasagar, one of Assam's largest tea-growing belts, has been among the worst-hit after incessant rainfall and a cloudburst in neighbouring Nagaland triggered a sudden rise in rivers originating from the hill state.

"The sudden surge of water in the rivers originating from Nagaland resulted in all major rivers flowing above the danger level. The breach of the embankment on Dorika River further aggravated the situation, causing extensive inundation across the tea estates of the Nazira region," the association said.

Among the affected gardens, Bamonpookrie Tea Estate has suffered the worst devastation. TAI said almost all tea estates in the region have been submerged, with workers' residential quarters, estate hospitals, schools, roads and other essential infrastructure remaining under floodwaters.

"Thousands of tea workers and their family members have been compelled to leave their homes and seek refuge in factory buildings, managers' bungalows and other elevated structures within the estates," it said.

Despite the adverse conditions, TAI said estate managements had extended all possible support to displaced workers.

The association also praised the response of the district administration. "The Tea Association of India also acknowledged and sincerely appreciated the prompt response of the Sivasagar district administration, which coordinated rescue operations, facilitated the evacuation of stranded persons and ensured timely medical assistance for those in need," it said.

Meanwhile, the Sivasagar District Agriculture Department has activated a 24x7 Flood Control Room to document crop and agricultural losses. Farmers have been urged to report damage through the helpline numbers 94357 09414, 69008 72364, 93652 14638 and 94012 08784.

Guwahati, July 20: Four separate protests erupted across Guwahati on Monday as opposition parties, student organisations and civil society groups rallied behind activist Sonam Wangchuk, while demanding reforms in the country's education system.

One of the major demonstrations was held at Chachal, where leaders and supporters of the Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Raijor Dal, Assam Nagarik Sanmilan, CPI(M), APHLC, CPI(ML) and CPI gathered in support of Wangchuk.

AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi and former MLA Manoranjan Talukdar took part in the protest, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and greater accountability in the education sector.

"Instead of inviting Sonam Wangchuk, who was on a peaceful fast demanding the legitimate rights of students, to the discussion table, the police forcibly removed him. This shows that the Central government has started fearing even democratic protests," Gogoi said in a social media post.

Demanding Pradhan's resignation, Gogoi added, "A government that cannot confront the arguments of its own citizens uses the police as a shield. This policy of repression must stop immediately. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should accept moral responsibility for the alleged question paper leak nexus and resign."

At another protest site in Chachal, the Satra Mukti Sangram Samiti (SMSS) launched an indefinite agitation in support of Wangchuk's campaign and against what it described as the deteriorating state of education in Assam.

An SMSS representative said the protest had two primary objectives - expressing solidarity with Wangchuk and the CJP's “Sansad Chalo” march while condemning the activist's alleged detention in Delhi, and highlighting long-standing issues affecting Assam's education sector.

The representative alleged that nearly 12,021 schools had been closed in Assam in recent years and that more than 30,000 teaching posts in secondary schools remained vacant.

The organisation also demanded the resignation of Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu.

Meanwhile, the state committees of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), All India Democratic Women's Association (AIDWA) and Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) staged a solidarity demonstration near Nehru Park.

The programme drew students, youth, academics and members of the public, who demanded greater transparency in the country's education system, a thorough investigation into alleged examination irregularities and the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.

SFI state secretary Rajdeep Mahanta questioned why the Union Education Minister had not resigned despite the allegations surrounding examination irregularities.

"With such widespread irregularities in the examination system and after around 20 students have taken their own lives, why has Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan not resigned? Prime Minister Narendra Modi has not spoken on the issue till date," he said.

In another demonstration, students gathered outside Cotton University and staged a protest in solidarity with the agitation in New Delhi.

The protesters voiced support for Wangchuk and echoed demands for reforms in the education system, joining similar demonstrations held across the city.

New Delhi, July 20:  The bodies of two individuals were found under suspicious circumstances in Delhi's Amar Colony area on Monday, officials said.

According to the police, the bodies were found at a flat in the Sant Nagar area in Amar Colony.

Officials stated that the police have taken both bodies into custody, and further proceedings are underway.

According to preliminary information, both bodies were discovered in a flat in the Sant Nagar area. A woman, originally from Nagpur, Maharashtra, had been living in the flat as a tenant for the past two years. Along with the woman's body, a man was also found dead in the flat.

The officials said that the man was found hanging from the ceiling fan, while the woman's body was lying on the bed.

Upon receiving the information, the police arrived at the scene and took possession of both bodies. Subsequently, the woman's family, residing in Nagpur, was informed.

Abhishek, the landlord, told IANS that he had rented out Room No. 4 of the building to the woman and she had been living there for two years.

"We were informed in the morning that someone had come to the house and was breaking the lock on the room. Following this, we sent the caretaker there," he said.

The landlord stated that when the caretaker inspected the room, he found the bodies of the woman and a man. He mentioned that they had details about the woman, who was approximately 26 years old, but had no information regarding the man.

"The woman worked in Nehru Place. She had a good demeanour and paid her rent on time," Abhishek said.

He noted that the young man had come to visit her, and there might have been a dispute between them, though they had no specific information about him.

Police said that an investigation is currently underway and further details are awaited.

New Delhi, July 20: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Monday took its demands to Union Health Minister JP Nadda, with spokespersons Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka submitting a memorandum and claiming the minister promised to take up the matter internally.

Following the meeting, Das claimed that Nadda assured the delegation he would discuss the demands "internally" with the party leadership. In a previous post, Das had said the two leaders waited for more than two hours before being granted a 10-minute audience with the Union minister.

"After waiting for more than two hours, @AshutoshRanka and I just met JP Nadda ji at his residence for 10 minutes. While we submitted a written letter with our demands, he has assured us that he will meanwhile speak internally. We are in that process. There is news of mass detention etc," Das wrote.

Ranka later said Nadda had sought time to discuss the demands with the party leadership.

The memorandum sought the immediate release of activist Sonam Wangchuk, the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, and Rs 1 crore compensation for the families of NEET aspirants who allegedly died by suicide.

He also appealed to Delhi Police to stop what he described as the use of "brute force" against peaceful protesters.

The meeting came as security agencies intensified efforts to prevent demonstrators from marching towards Parliament.

According to sources, several protesters were detained from Mandi House, Patel Chowk, Janpath, Jantar Mantar, Parliament Street and other key locations across the New Delhi district.

At least seven people were detained near the Reserve Bank of India, close to Parliament.

Sources said those detained were taken to different locations across the national capital to prevent them from regrouping.

They are expected to be released after being issued warnings, while police will verify their antecedents to ascertain whether any have previous criminal records.

Security remained exceptionally tight across central Delhi, with multiple layers of barricades, heavy deployment of Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel, intensified vehicle checks, and senior officers monitoring the situation to prevent protesters from breaching security cordons around Parliament.

Despite the restrictions, thousands of protesters converged on central Delhi, with many attempting to reach Parliament through inner lanes after being stopped on major roads.

Clashes reportedly broke out after police used tear gas and lathi-charges to disperse demonstrators, some of whom were seen in school uniforms. Both protesters and police personnel sustained injuries during the confrontations.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Police have dismissed reports claiming that CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke was detained or arrested during the protests near Parliament.

This came as Das initially posted claims that Dipke had been "picked up" by police during the 'Sansad Chalo' protest.

Refuting the claims, the Delhi Police said, "Misleading reports are currently circulating on various social media platforms claiming that Abhijit Dipke has been detained by the Delhi Police. It is formally clarified that these allegations are entirely false and he is available on stage."

Following the police statement, Das issued a retraction confirming that Dipke was neither detained nor placed under arrest.

The protests also echoed inside Parliament, where Opposition members raised the issue soon after proceedings began.

The uproar over the CJP-led agitation, which originated at Jantar Mantar, led to repeated adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

Kolkata, July 20:  A 40-year-old man was arrested in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl after luring her with a mobile phone, police said on Monday.

The husband of a former Trinamool Congress councillor has also come under the scanner after allegations surfaced that he tried to shield the accused.

The incident has triggered a huge uproar in Ward No 2 of Dum Dum Municipality in North 24 Parganas district. The victim's mother and local residents are demanding the strictest punishment for the accused.

According to police, the accused, identified as Billal Ghazi, a resident of the locality living in rented accommodation, allegedly took the minor girl to a toilet on Sunday evening and sexually assaulted her while keeping her distracted with a mobile phone.

At that time, the child's mother was busy cooking. So the incident escaped her notice. A woman from the neighbouring house informed her about the incident. As soon as the news was received, the victim's mother reached the spot. She saw that her daughter was being sexually harassed. She informed former Trinamool councillor Baby Mandal. Allegedly, Baby's husband, Jalil Mandal, did not stand by the family. He threatened her to leave the house. He also allegedly told her not to tell anyone about the incident.

Later, the news reached the local party office. With their help, the child's family members filed a complaint with Dum Dum Police Station. Accordingly, the police reached the spot and arrested the accused person.

A case has been registered under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act against the accused. He will be produced in a court where the police will seek his custody for interrogation.

The locals meanwhile demanded the strictest punishment for the culprit. They have also demanded action against the husband of the former Trinamool councillor. However, the police are yet to take any action against him as an investigation into the matter is underway.

After The Kerala Story, Adah often found herself associated with controversial subjects such as Bastar: The Naxal Story, Tumko Meri Kasam and Gajra to name a few.

Asked if it is a conscious career choice, or are filmmakers now approaching you specifically for such roles, the actress shared that, for her, every character feels equally real once she faces the camera, irrespective of whether the story is inspired by true events or born out of imagination.

She told that : “Actually, after ‘The Kerala Story’, I did ‘Sunflower’, where I play a bar dancer in a completely fictional world. Then I did Reeta Sanyal, where I got to play eight different characters… It's adventurous, quirky, and far removed from reality.”

“I also did the Commando OTT series, which is pure action entertainment, and played the same character, Bhavana Reddy, from the Commando franchise.”

The actress added: “My next film is a horror film, which I hope for all of us, isn't based on a true story, and I hope ghosts aren't going to haunt us like that! I'm also doing a Superhero film, which is fictional and a film where I played Devi (goddess) Gajra, then came to me, which was based on true events.”

Adah said that when she’s in front of the camera, it is all the same.

Agartala, July 20: Tripura Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Monday after he was discovered unconscious inside the bathroom of his office chamber at the Police Headquarters.

Dhankar was reportedly rushed to GB Pant Hospital in Agartala after being found unconscious, but doctors were unable to revive him despite prolonged resuscitation efforts.

Confirming the death, senior physician at GB Pant Hospital Dr Pradip Bhowmik said the DGP was brought to the emergency department in an unresponsive condition.

“On arrival, there was no pulse or blood pressure. We immediately initiated cardiopulmonary resuscitation and continued all resuscitative measures for about 48 minutes. Despite our best efforts, there was no response and he was declared dead at 12:48 pm,” Dr Bhowmik said.

He said the exact cause of death would be known only after the post-mortem examination.

“It was almost like a brought-dead case. The body has been sent for post-mortem and the exact cause of death will be known only after the examination,” he added.

While speculation surfaced over the circumstances surrounding Dhankar's death, including unverified claims on social media suggesting suicide, neither the Tripura Police nor the state government has officially commented on or confirmed such reports.

The body has been shifted to the hospital mortuary, while family members, including his son, are expected to arrive in Agartala shortly.

Senior state officials, including Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Health Secretary Kiran Gitte and West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Vishal Kumar, reached the hospital soon after the incident. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha also visited the hospital to take stock of the situation.

Leader of Opposition Jitendra Choudhury and former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar also visited the hospital following news of the DGP's death.

As speculation over the incident grew, Choudhury demanded a judicial inquiry under the supervision of a sitting judge of the Tripura High Court.

“He was among the most sincere and upright officers in the Tripura Police. This is an extraordinary incident. If it is found to be a case of suicide, the circumstances that led to such an extreme step must be thoroughly investigated. We demand a judicial probe under a sitting High Court judge,” the CPI(M) leader said.

Dhankar, a senior IPS officer, was serving as the head of the Tripura Police at the time of his death. The exact circumstances leading to his death remained unclear at the time of filing this report.

Patna, July 20:  A Class 12 student was shot dead by unidentified assailants while on her way to school in Bihar's Samastipur district on Monday, triggering shock and panic in the area.

The incident took place in Kejiya village under the Vaini police station limits in the morning.

According to police, the student, who studied in Class 12 at Kasturba Vidyalaya, had left home in her school uniform to attend classes when she was attacked near her residence.

The assailants allegedly fired multiple rounds at her, killing her on the spot before fleeing the scene.

Police reached the location soon after receiving information about the incident and launched an investigation.

During the preliminary examination, officers recovered four spent bullet casings from the crime scene.

Teams from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) and the District Investigation Unit (DIU) were also called in to collect forensic evidence and assist in the probe.

Preliminary findings indicate that the student may have been struck by three bullets, although officials said the exact number of gunshot injuries will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination. Her body has been sent for an autopsy.

Sadar-1 SDPO Sanjay Kumar Pandey described the incident as a heinous crime and said the investigation is being conducted on a priority basis.

He revealed that information provided by the victim's family has helped police identify a suspect, and raids are underway to apprehend the accused.

According to the SDPO, the family has also shared important details regarding a possible motive behind the murder, and investigators are pursuing all available leads.

However, he clarified that the exact number of assailants is yet to be established and remains part of the ongoing investigation.

To ensure a swift and thorough probe, the district police are constituting a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Officials said the investigation is being carried out using both scientific and technical evidence, with efforts focused on identifying and arresting all those involved in the killing.

Guwahati, July 20: Several parts of Guwahati remained inundated on Monday in the aftermath of overnight heavy rainfall, disrupting traffic and normal life across the city.

The downpour also triggered a fresh landslide in the Maligaon area, injuring four members of a family and adding to the city's mounting monsoon woes.

The landslide struck Madhabdev Nagar in the Goshala locality of Maligaon on Sunday night, damaging a residential house and trapping its occupants under debris.

The injured were identified as Ranjit Das, a railway employee, his wife Sabitri Das, and their son and daughter.

Rescue personnel evacuated the family and shifted them to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.

Amid reports of fresh slope failures at multiple locations, the Kamrup (Metro) district administration issued public advisory urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel in landslide-prone areas.

The advisory identified Kamakhya Main Road beyond Prashanti Lodge, Kamakhya Colony near Ganesh Mandir, Paschim Kamakhya Gaon, Pandu Temple Ghat and Madhabdev Nagar in Maligaon as vulnerable locations.

"The traffic flow to Kamakhya temple may be regulated due to recurrent landslide incidents in the temple main road which may delay the darshan of devotees," the district administration warned in the advisory.

Beyond the hillside settlements, the overnight downpour also triggered widespread waterlogging across the city, with several arterial roads remained waterlogged for hours.

Areas including Hatigaon, Survey, Maligaon, Narengi, Basistha and Haokuchi witnessed severe inundation, affecting vehicular movement and submerging low-lying residential pockets.

Overflowing drains and clogged channels compounded the situation as rainwater accumulated rapidly in several neighbourhoods.

Visuals from across the city showed floodwaters surging into temple premises, including the Basistha Temple complex.

At the Bhimashankar Temple, strong currents of water were seen rushing through the shrine premises, prompting authorities to prohibit entry on safety grounds.

Despite the adverse weather, devotees continued to throng temples across the city on the first Monday of the auspicious Sawan month, though access remained restricted in flood-affected areas.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) urged residents to remain vigilant in view of the prevailing weather conditions.

"ASDMA requests all the people of Guwahati city to remain vigilant. Daily commuters and long-distance travellers are requested to plan their routines accordingly, avoiding unnecessary movement during periods of intense rainfall. Residents in low-lying and hillside areas should stay alert for any signs of flooding or landslides," it said.

With waterlogging persisting in several neighbourhoods and the threat of fresh landslides looming over hillside settlements, authorities have appealed to residents to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert until weather conditions improve.

The sector contributes nearly 19 per cent of global fibre production, according to the government.

Recent interventions by the government to promote the production of cotton focus on productivity, quality, market access and value addition.

MSP operations continue to provide price support during market downturns. The Mission for Cotton Productivity aims to raise output to 498 lakh bales by 2031.

Technology demonstrations, digital procurement and traceability initiatives are strengthening competitiveness. These efforts are enhancing productivity, improving quality and reinforcing India’s position in the global cotton economy, the government said.

Due to its economic importance in India, cotton is also termed as 'White-Gold'.

The crop supports the livelihoods of around 6 million cotton farmers with 114.84 lakh hectares devoted to the crop nationwide. It also sustains employment for another 40-50 million people engaged in related activities such as cotton processing and trade.

Beyond clothing, cotton plays a vital role in earning foreign exchange through exports of fibre, yarn, fabrics and garments.

India continues to maintain a strong presence in the global cotton trade.

In 2024-25, the country exported an estimated 18 lakh bales, equivalent to 0.31 million metric tonnes. This accounts for about 3.37 per cent of total world exports, amounting to 541.69 lakh bales (9.21 million metric tonnes), which reflects India’s role as a significant exporter in the international cotton market.

Further, India exports cotton to several major global markets, reflecting strong and diversified international demand.

In value terms, cotton exports reached $11.49 billion in FY25.

The United States of America emerged as the largest destination for Indian cotton fabrics and made-ups exports, accounting for 26.35 per cent of cotton exports, following Bangladesh (19.81 per cent) and Sri Lanka (5.11 per cent).

Other important destinations included the United Kingdom, with a share of 2.38 per cent, and the United Arab Emirates, at 2.32 per cent.

These export patterns highlight the diverse global demand for Indian cotton.

Cotton production in India is largely concentrated in 9 major states, grouped into 3 distinct agro-ecological zones: Northern Zone comprising Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan; Central Zone comprising Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh and Southern Zone comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka.

In addition to these states, cotton is also grown in Odisha and Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi, July 20:  The National Testing Agency (NTA) on Monday rejected a series of claims made by several NEET (UG) 2026 candidates regarding their OMR answer sheets and results, stating that the images circulating on social media were digitally fabricated and did not match the official records.

In a series of posts on X, the NTA said it had verified the records of multiple candidates, including Avaneesh Srivastava, Abhay Yadav, Lakshya Singh and Arya Singh, and found that the scores declared by the agency were accurate.

Referring to Avaneesh Srivastava (Application No. 260411198880, Roll No. 2001805051), the NTA said: “The genuine OMR of the candidate is on file. It was also emailed to him at the registered e-mail address during the OMR Response Key challenge window.”

The agency said the original OMR bore the candidate’s correct personal details, signature, thumb impression and the signatures of invigilators.

It further stated: “The image being circulated is not an OMR sheet issued by NTA. The identity inserted into that image (‘Ajeet Singh, son of Shri Lakhan Singh and Smt. Reena Singh’) does not correspond to any candidate registered for NEET (UG) 2026.”

According to the NTA, the viral image was “a digitally regenerated version of the candidate’s own genuine OMR sheet”, in which identity fields had been overwritten using AI or OCR-based tools. The agency said Avaneesh Srivastava’s score of 337 marks had been verified and remained unchanged.

In another post concerning Abhay Yadav (Application No. 260411367191), the NTA rejected the candidate’s public claim that only five questions had been left unanswered and that he deserved 634 marks.

“The candidate has stated publicly that only 5 questions were left unattempted and that the result should be 634 marks. This is not supported by the record. Of 180 questions, 44 were left unattempted. The OMR and the calculation sheet on file are mutually consistent.”

The agency said Abhay Yadav’s score of 164 marks had been verified and stood as declared.

Responding to claims made by Lakshya Singh (Application No. 260412053016), the NTA said the circulated OMR sheet had been digitally manipulated.

“The image being circulated shows response markings that are not present on the genuine sheet. Additional bubbles have been shaded in by digital means to create a forged OMR sheet.”

The NTA said Lakshya Singh had attempted 54 of the 180 questions, answering 34 correctly and 20 incorrectly, while leaving 126 questions unattempted. His score of 116 marks was verified, it added.

The agency also dismissed allegations made by Arya Singh (Application No. 260410434102), saying the circulated OMR image had been altered.

“The image being circulated is a digitally altered version of that same sheet. The recorded time of signature of one of the invigilators has been changed from 3:45 PM on the genuine sheet to 2:45 PM on the altered image. There are several other markings of digital alteration on the forged OMR sheet.”

The NTA said Arya Singh’s score of 167 marks had also been verified and remained unchanged.

In a separate post addressing the wider controversy, the agency said: “Regarding OMR-related claims for NEET (UG) 2026 being circulated on social media, it may be noted that the genuine OMR of every candidate concerned is on record with NTA… The images being circulated as the ‘correct’ OMR are digitally fabricated. They are not documents issued by NTA.”

The agency warned that “Creating or circulating a forged OMR answer sheet is an offence under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024,” adding that action could be taken against those involved in generating or sharing such forged documents.

Guwahati, July 20: The Assam government stepped up its flood response on Monday, with four cabinet ministers reaching the worst-affected districts of Upper Assam to oversee rescue and relief operations.

Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, Industries, Commerce and Public Enterprises Minister Bimal Borah, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Keshab Mahanta and Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain visited flood-hit areas in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo to assess the situation, monitor ongoing operations and coordinate with district administrations.

The field visits came a day after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma directed the ministers to immediately move to Upper Assam and supervise relief efforts in the three worst-hit districts as the flood situation deteriorated.

The Chief Minister also said he had asked all MPs and MLAs from the affected districts to remain on the ground and closely monitor the evolving situation.

"I am in constant touch with all the public representatives and have assured all possible assistance from the Government of Assam to deal with this situation. As rains continue and water levels are rising, we are reinforcing our efforts to shift people to safer places and provide them with all necessary support," Sarma said in a post on social media, on Monday.

Minister Borah said he reached Sivasagar early on Monday to review the flood situation with the district commissioners of Sivasagar and Charaideo before visiting Serekapora village to assess rescue and relief operations.

He said the government was mobilising all available resources to ensure timely rescue, relief, rehabilitation and restoration of essential services.

"We stand firmly with our people and will do everything possible to overcome this challenge together," Borah said.

Water Resources Minister Borgohain visited Lonporiya and nearby villages under the Bokota-Lakuwa mandal in Demow constituency, where rescue operations are underway.

He said evacuations would continue in other inundated villages and assured that all necessary measures had been taken to ensure the safety of affected families.

Meanwhile, the Indian Army has launched Operation Jal Rahat, joining the state's rescue efforts to evacuate people stranded in several flood-hit areas of Upper Assam. T

The deployment followed the Assam government's request for military assistance as incessant rainfall and rising river levels worsened the flood situation.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods had affected eight districts, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Charaideo, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Udalguri and Jorhat, till Sunday evening. The deluge impacted 22 revenue circles and 298 villages, affecting more than 57,000 people. Over 3,874 hectares of agricultural land also remained inundated.

Hyderabad, July 20:  An IPS trainee officer undergoing training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad allegedly attempted suicide on Monday, a day after police booked him on charges of sexually harassing a fellow woman trainee officer.

The officer, identified as Uday Krishna Reddy, allegedly consumed a poisonous substance at his relative's residence in Moti Nagar, Hyderabad. He was rushed to a private hospital in SR Nagar and was undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to reports.

Before the suicide attempt, he posted on social media that the complaints and rumours against him are baseless and untrue. He stated that he fully trusts the legal process and believes that justice will prevail. He also urged the media to confirm facts before reporting.

Police registered a case against him on Sunday based on a complaint filed by a 30-year-old woman trainee IPS officer. The complainant alleged that Uday Krishna Reddy harassed her between June 23 and July 10 while both were undergoing training at the academy.

In her complaint at Attapur Police Station, she accused Uday Krishna Reddy of sending her abusive messages and subjecting her to criminal intimidation. He also allegedly recorded her private video and sent it to her husband.

According to the complainant, the accused started harassing her on June 23 by sending sexually abusive messages through WhatsApp.

She stated in her complaint that the accused made derogatory remarks about her before fellow trainees and falsely accused her of having a sexual relationship with another trainee.

 The complainant also stated that Uday Krishna Reddy intimidated and blackmailed her into revealing her personal messages. She alleged that he took her mobile phone to his room and forced her to disclose its password.

The accused trainee officer allegedly recorded her private video without her knowledge and later sent it to her husband with the intention of blackmailing her.

After the case was registered, Krishna left the National Police Academy and went to his relative’s house.

Based on the complaint, Attapur police registered a case under Sections 74 (criminal force against a woman), 75 (sexual harassment), 77 (voyeurism), 78 (stalking), 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 351(2) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 66E (violation of privacy) and 67A (transmission of sexually explicit material in electronic form) of the IT Act.

Hailing from Ullapalem, Prakasam district, Reddy last year secured an All India Rank of 350 in the Civil Service Examination and joined the Indian Police Service (IPS). He studied in a government school and joined the police force as a constable in 2013.

He quit the police job in 2018 to pursue the Civil Services full-time. Despite failing three attempts, he refused to give up. In his fourth attempt, he secured a 780th rank and joined the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). However, he was determined to wear the IPS uniform. He made another attempt during training and achieved the 350th rank.

His journey from police constable to IPS officer had won praise from all. “Udayakrishna Reddy's journey from Constable to IPS officer proves that no dream is too big when backed by courage and relentless hard work. His story reminds us that determination can break every barrier and script new destinies. The future belongs to those who never give up,” Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had posted on ‘X’.

Ahmedabad, July 20:  The death toll in the explosion at an allegedly illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Ahmedabad's Ramol area has risen to 10 after one of the critically injured victims succumbed to extensive burn injuries at the Civil Hospital in the early hours of Monday.

Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi said the deceased, identified as Govind Damor, died at 2:15 a.m. after suffering burns over more than 95 per cent of his body. He was originally from the Dahod district, like many of the victims.

"Today, five patients were admitted to the Civil Hospital following the tragic incident at the Ramol firecracker factory. Among them, there was one woman and four men. Of these, one woman and one man had sustained severe burn injuries. The man had suffered burns over more than 95 per cent of his body, while the woman had sustained burns over more than 75 per cent of her body. Both were in critical condition and were undergoing treatment in the ICU," Dr Joshi told IANS.

Dr Joshi said the remaining patients continue to receive specialised treatment.

"The other three patients are admitted to the Burns Ward. Two of them have burn injuries, with one having sustained 40 per cent burns and the other 20 per cent burns. Since the Civil Hospital has a Skin Bank, donated skin has been grafted onto approximately 28 per cent of the body of the patient with 40 per cent burns. Similarly, donated skin from the Skin Bank has been grafted onto about 15 per cent of the affected area of the patient with 20 per cent burns. Our plastic surgery team is providing intensive treatment and is making every effort to ensure their speedy recovery," he noted.

He added that the fifth patient admitted to the hospital "is completely stable".

The blast occurred on Saturday afternoon at the 'New Gujarat Fire Works' unit on Ramol-Gatrad Road, where investigators allege an illegally operated firecracker manufacturing unit was functioning despite its licence having expired.

The explosion triggered a major fire, destroying the premises and trapping workers inside. Personnel from the nearby Rapid Action Force (RAF) camp, firefighters, and police carried out rescue operations before the blaze was brought under control.

Police have registered a case against factory operator Ramila Dodia, her son Mehul Dodia and their alleged partner Sadiq Saiyed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Explosive Substances Act and the Explosives Act.

All three have been arrested, while a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to conduct a detailed probe into the incident.

Authorities are also investigating alleged violations of safety regulations, the source of the explosives and the operation of other illegal firecracker manufacturing units in and around Ahmedabad as part of a wider crackdown launched after the tragedy.

New Delhi, July 20: The Monsoon Session of Parliament got off to a stormy start on Monday, with repeated adjournments disrupting proceedings in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

Opposition members staged noisy protests over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, police action against demonstrators in Delhi and allegations of donation theft linked to the Ram temple in Ayodha.

Proceedings in both Houses were disrupted multiple times before 2 pm as Opposition MPs raised slogans, displayed placards and sought discussions on issues they described as matters of national concern.

In the Lok Sabha, proceedings were adjourned four times as the Opposition disrupted business from the outset.

As soon as the House assembled at 11 am for Question Hour, Opposition members began raising slogans demanding action against those responsible for the alleged NEET paper leak and the alleged donation theft at the Ram temple, forcing Speaker Om Birla to adjourn the House till noon.

Before adjourning, Birla expressed displeasure over Opposition members raising slogans even during obituary references for six former Members of Parliament, saying such conduct set an undesirable precedent.

When the House reconvened at noon, the protests continued, prompting another adjournment until 12.30 pm.

Before proceedings were halted, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal introduced a Bill to replace the ordinance that increased the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges from 34 to 38, including the Chief Justice of India.

The House witnessed similar scenes when it met again at 12.30 pm. Repeated appeals by the Chair to take up Zero Hour went unheeded as Opposition members continued shouting slogans.

Presiding officer Dilip Saikia adjourned the House till 1 pm. When proceedings resumed at 1 pm, the protests persisted.

Saikia urged Opposition MPs to return to their seats and participate in discussions, saying the government was prepared to debate all public issues.

"The House is ready for discussions on various issues. But you are not interested. You don't want to discuss people's issues. This is not the way. You are disrupting the House repeatedly. You are showing banners and posters, which is not acceptable," he said.

With the Opposition refusing to relent, the House was adjourned again till 2 pm.

The Rajya Sabha witnessed an equally turbulent session, with proceedings being adjourned four times before 2 pm over protests linked to the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) agitation at Jantar Mantar and the alleged NEET paper leak.

Soon after papers were laid on the table and newly elected members took oath, Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge sought to raise the NEET-UG 2026 issue, saying it concerned the future of lakhs of students.

Claiming that thousands of students protesting at Jantar Mantar had been subjected to a police baton-charge, Kharge accused the government of trying to suppress the agitation.

"The government is trying to beat them down and suppress the issue," he said, as Opposition members rose from their seats shouting "shame, shame".

Amid the uproar, Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan adjourned the House till noon.

The disruptions continued when the House reassembled, with Opposition members raising slogans in support of protesting students and against the alleged police action.

They also raised the issue of the alleged donation theft at the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The continued sloganeering forced successive adjournments at noon, 12.30 pm and 12.50 pm, before the House was finally adjourned till 2 pm.

New Delhi, July 20: The Centre on Monday reached out to the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) for talks even as its "Sansad Chalo" march sparked tense scenes in central Delhi, with thousands of protesters attempting to move towards Parliament, clashes erupting with police and security being tightened across the national capital.

The development came on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, as the CJP intensified its campaign over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations, demanding accountability, comprehensive reforms in the examination system and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

In a post on social media, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said the government had contacted the organisation on Monday morning and invited its representatives for discussions.

"It's 11:52 AM. Ashutosh Ranka and I, on behalf of the Cockroach Janta Party, are on our way to meet JP Nadda. The government had reached out for talks in the morning. Our demands are clear. The youth have gathered in huge numbers," Das wrote.

There was, however, no official confirmation from the government regarding the meeting or the proposed talks.

Meanwhile, thousands of protesters assembled near Parliament Street and Jantar Mantar despite heavy rainfall and unprecedented security arrangements. As demonstrators attempted to march towards Parliament, police stopped them at multiple barricades erected across the high-security zone.

According to sources, protesters attempted to push through the barricades around 11.25 am, leading to scuffles in which several protesters and police personnel sustained minor injuries. Around 10 to 15 protesters were detained.

Security forces also fired tear gas shells near Shastri Bhawan after groups of protesters allegedly tried to breach security cordons in an attempt to reach Jantar Mantar and join the CJP's march.

Videos circulating from the protest site showed police resorting to baton-charge after demonstrators allegedly attempted to force their way through barricades. However, New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma maintained that Delhi Police personnel had not used force against the protesters.

Police had earlier denied permission for the march and imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in the area, warning that no attempt to proceed towards Parliament would be allowed.

Security was stepped up significantly across Delhi, particularly at border entry points and other sensitive locations in the New Delhi district. Police conducted extensive vehicle checks and deployed additional personnel to avert any law-and-order situation.

The heightened security measures also disrupted normal commuting across the capital.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) shut Janpath, Patel Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Central Secretariat and Seva Teerth metro stations, leading to heavy congestion and confusion among commuters.

Despite the restrictions, protesters continued arriving at Jantar Mantar throughout the morning. The CJP shared photographs and videos on social media claiming that large crowds had gathered despite the rain and security clampdown.

"Heavy rains and massive security, but nothing will stop the cockroaches today," the organisation posted.

Separately, three All India Students' Association (AISA) activists — Neha, Manish and Aameen — ended their 23-day hunger strike following an appeal by a delegation of parliamentarians, civil society representatives and eminent personalities. The delegation assured them that their demands would be raised during the Monsoon Session and urged them to shift the agitation from a hunger strike to parliamentary and public campaigns.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk, however, said his fast would continue beyond the "Sansad Chalo" march unless the government accepted responsibility for alleged failures in the education system or political leaders assured him that the issue would be taken up in Parliament.

He also alleged that he remained under "illegal detention" at Safdarjung Hospital, claiming that his movement, speech and communication continued to be restricted.

Chisinau, July 20:  President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Chisinau on Monday on the first leg of her State visits to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian President to Moldova. She was warmly received at Chisinau International Airport by Moldova's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi.

"President Droupadi Murmu reached Chisinau, Moldova on the first leg of her State Visits to Moldova, North Macedonia and Romania. On her arrival at Chisinau International Airport, she was warmly received by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mr. Mihai Popsoi. This is the first ever visit by an Indian President to Moldova," President's Secretariat posted on X.

President Murmu arrived in Moldova for a State visit at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. This is the first ever visit by an Indian President to Moldova.

During her visit, President Murmu will hold talks with President Sandu. She will meet Moldova Parliament's President Igor Grosu. She will also have interaction with members of the Moldova-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, address a Business Forum and members of the Indian Community, according to the MEA.

"India and Moldova enjoy warm and friendly relations. This visit would mark a significant and historical milestone and elevate bilateral ties to a broad-based partnership. There is good scope for mutually beneficial cooperation in the areas of agriculture, healthcare and pharmaceuticals, IT and education," the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in statement.

While addressing a special briefing on President Murmu's visit to Moldova on July 17, Secretary (West), MEA, Sibi George, noted that the visit to Moldova will provide an opportunity to review bilateral ties and discuss ways to expand cooperation. He stated that President's Murmu visit will be instrumental in fostering strong business-to-business linkages and trade and investment ties

"The proposed visit provides an opportunity to review the entire spectrum of bilateral relations, and discuss ways to expand cooperation and elevate bilateral relations from political goodwill to a broad-based partnership encompassing areas such as trade and investment, digital technologies, innovation, renewable energy, healthcare, education, agriculture, culture, connectivity," Sibi George said.

The Moldova leg marks the first stop of President Murmu's three-nation visit, following which she will travel to North Macedonia and Romania for high-level engagements.

Jorhat, July 20: The flood situation in Jorhat continued to worsen on Monday after the Bhogdoi River breached embankments at multiple locations, inundating vast stretches of agricultural land and residential areas and forcing people to seek shelter on higher ground.

The river breached embankments in the early hours of Monday, sending floodwaters into villages across north-western Jorhat.

Areas including Alengmora, Khutiyapatia, Majiyabhedi, Sonari Gaon and Katiyamor Chuk were among the worst affected.

“We have never seen such a dangerous state of the Bhogdoi River. The embankment breached around 2 am and the water level rose suddenly, leaving people with no time to prepare. Along with saving themselves, people are trying to shift their livestock to higher ground wherever possible,” a resident of Alengmora said.

The resident said nearly 16 villages, including Alengmora, was reeling under floodwaters and alleged that the shortage of safe drinking water had emerged as a major concern.

Local residents said the Bhogdoi River is witnessing one of its worst flood spells since 1988, attributing the surge to incessant rainfall in Nagaland and heavy precipitation across Upper Assam.

“We urge the Chief Minister and the administration to arrange drinking water and food, especially for children taking shelter in community spaces and on higher ground,” another villager added.

Authorities are shifting affected residents to safer locations, while electricity supply has been disconnected in some inundated areas as a precautionary measure. Senior district officials remained on the ground, monitoring the evolving situation.

Amid the deteriorating situation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said the State government had requested the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to remain on standby to support evacuation and rescue operations in flood-hit districts, including Jorhat, if required.

In a post on social media, Sarma said he had directed Cabinet Ministers Ajanta Neog, Bimal Bora, Keshab Mahanta and Sushanta Borgohain to immediately visit affected areas, supervise relief operations and ensure timely assistance to all affected families.

“The safety and well-being of our people is our highest priority. I am monitoring the situation round the clock and we will take every necessary step to protect lives and provide all possible relief,” the Chief Minister said.

Ferry services to Majuli suspended

The worsening flood conditions have also disrupted connectivity with Majuli. Ferry services between the river island and Jorhat were suspended indefinitely after rising waters of the Brahmaputra submerged ferry docking ramps.

The suspension has stranded hundreds of passengers and created difficulties for patients requiring medical treatment outside the island.

“The water level of the Brahmaputra is rising dangerously. Authorities have directed the closure of ghats and ferry services. People are facing transportation problems, but there is no alternative under the circumstances,” a ferry operator said.

Another resident said he was forced to cancel plans to take his father to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.

“Today was his scheduled date for admission to the hospital. But the ferry services between Majuli and Nimati have stopped, and we had to return home,” he said.

Meanwhile, the district administration, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and other rescue agencies continue operations to evacuate stranded residents and prevent further damage.

Officials and local residents also worked to reinforce vulnerable stretches of embankments amid fears of further breaches.

Guwahati/Lumding, July 20: Heavy overnight rainfall and flooding in Upper Assam severely disrupted railway services on Monday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded at Lumding Junction after water submerged railway tracks near Simaluguri in Sivasagar district.

The disruption was triggered after the overflowing Dikhow River inundated the Simaluguri station yard, railway tracks, railway colony and adjoining areas, forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) to suspend train movement between the Simaluguri–Namtiali and Simaluguri–Selenghat sections until further notice on safety grounds.

The suspension led to the cancellation of several passenger and intercity services, while multiple long-distance trains were diverted and others short terminated or short originated, affecting rail connectivity across Upper Assam.

At Lumding Junction, the sudden cancellations left hundreds of passengers, including women, children and elderly travellers, stranded for hours.

Many complained of inadequate information and alleged that railway authorities offered little assistance during the disruption. Frustrated passengers said they had been left to fend for themselves despite the large-scale cancellations.

In an effort to ease the congestion, the NFR operated a special train from Lumding Junction to Jorhat for passengers travelling towards Upper Assam. However, the additional service proved insufficient to accommodate the large number of stranded commuters.

The Lumding Division later set up a passenger help booth at the station to assist travellers with train schedules, provide updates and guide them on alternative travel arrangements.

The flood-related disruption led to the cancellation of the following trains:

• 55914 Tinsukia–Jorhat Town Passenger

• 75602 Tinsukia–Lumding DEMU

• 15604 Ledo–Guwahati Intercity Express

• 15968 Ledo–Rangiya Intercity Express

• 55910 Dibrugarh–Simaluguri Passenger

Apart from these, the NFR also cancelled Jorhat Town–Tinsukia Passenger, Lumding–Tinsukia DEMU, Rangiya–New Tinsukia Intercity Express, Simaluguri–Dibrugarh Passenger and the Guwahati–Ledo Intercity Express, while several Rajdhani, Vivek Express and other long-distance trains were diverted through the Rangiya–Rangapara–Dibrugarh route.

Several services were also short terminated or originated due to the flooding.

To assist affected passengers on diverted trains, the railway arranged food packets, drinking water, ticket refunds and help desks at stations.

ASTC buses and local vehicles were deployed at Namtiali to transport passengers to Sibsagar Town station, from where a special train was planned for Dibrugarh and New Tinsukia. The NFR also facilitated onward travel for passengers stranded on trains that were short terminated at Selenghat and Mariani.

Railway officials said the affected track section is being continuously monitored and inspected before services are restored. Passengers have been advised to check the latest train status before commencing their journey.

The latest disruption has once again exposed the vulnerability of railway connectivity in Upper Assam during the monsoon season, as recurring floods continue to affect movement along one of the region's most critical rail corridors.

New York, July 20:  The 2026 FIFA World Cup final ended in ugly scenes as the summit clash descended into chaos immediately after the final whistle, with players exchanging punches and Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes grabbing Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat.

Spain secured their second World Cup title with a tense 1-0 victory in extra time, but the historic win was quickly overshadowed by physical altercations on the pitch, leading to a post-match turmoil.

Argentina defender Nahuel Molina appeared to punch one of the Spanish players in the stomach. In an another altercation, midfielder Paredes was seen shoving Spain’s Eric Garcia by the throat as Scaloni intervened.

Beyond the clash with Garcia, Paredes tackled Gavi to the ground, shoved him in the face, and seemed to kick a boot toward the 21-year-old Barcelona midfielder. At the same time, Molina appeared to swing a punch at Rodri, causing the Spanish captain to stop and angrily confront the Argentine defender.

“Paredes threw two or three haymakers into someone’s face. He went for them. There is no place or space for that,” England legend Alan Shearer said on the BBC. “We know how much it means to them and we know how much it hurts to lose, but there is a way to lose. Too many times we have seen that from Argentina. The reaction after the final whistle is terrible.”

Argentina was also accused of one final classless act when they appeared to turn their backs on Spanish players as the world champions accepted their World Cup medals.

Guwahati, Jul 20: The flood situation in Assam worsened on Sunday with one more person losing their life, taking this year's flood death toll to five, while the number of people affected by the deluge climbed to more than 57,000 across seven districts.

As the crisis deepened in Upper Assam, the state government requested the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to remain on standby for possible evacuation and rescue operations.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority's (ASDMA) daily flood bulletin, the latest fatality was reported from Sivasagar district.

he floods have now affected more than 57,100 people in Charaideo, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts.

Charaideo remained the worst-hit district with nearly 24,000 people affected, followed by Dhemaji with around 22,000 and Dibrugarh with over 4,000.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 10 people from different parts of Charaideo during the day.

The floodwaters have submerged 298 villages across the state and damaged 3,874.84 hectares of agricultural land.

Embankments, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure have also suffered damage in several districts.

The Burhidihing River continued to flow above the danger level at Chenimari in Dibrugarh district's Khowang area, raising concerns of further inundation.

The ASDMA said the administration is currently operating 14 relief camps and relief distribution centres across four districts, where 440 displaced people are being sheltered.

During the last 24 hours, authorities distributed 58.17 quintals of rice, 10.89 quintals of dal, 3.26 quintals of salt and 326.88 litres of mustard oil among affected families.

The ASDMA added that the floods have also affected more than 37,558 domestic animals and poultry across the state, compounding the humanitarian impact of the ongoing deluge.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the government has asked the Army and the Air Force to be prepared to assist civil authorities if the flood situation deteriorates further.

"As the flood situation in Sivasagar, Charaideo and Jorhat continues to worsen, the Assam government has requested the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force to be on standby to support evacuation and rescue operations, if required," Sarma said in a post on social media on Sunday evening.

The Chief Minister also deputed four cabinet ministers, Ajanta Neog, Bimal Borah, Keshab Mahanta and Susanta Borgohain, to immediately visit the flood-affected districts of Upper Assam to supervise rescue and relief operations.

He said the ministers have been instructed to ensure timely assistance reaches every affected family, adding that the government is monitoring the situation round the clock.

"The safety and well-being of our people is our highest priority. I am monitoring the situation round the clock, and we will take every necessary step to protect lives and provide all possible relief," Sarma said.

New York, July 20:  France captain Kylian Mbappe has won the Golden Boot for FIFA World Cup 2026, retaining the title of tournament top scorer which he claimed at Qatar 2022.

The France forward took his tally to ten with a double in Les Bleus’ 6-4 defeat by England in an enthralling and end-to-end Bronze final in Miami on Saturday. Having struck eight times to finish top scorer at Qatar 2022, Mbappe became the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice.

The 27-year-old was the first man to reach double figures for World Cup goals since Gerd Muller for West Germany in 1970. Only Just Fontaine, who hit 13 for France in 1958, and Hungary's Sandor Kocsis with 11 in 1954, have scored more individual goals in a single tournament.

Mbappe opened his scoring account in France's opener by netting a spectacular brace against Senegal, thus becoming the top scorer in his national team's history. He scored another two goals against Iraq and two more against Sweden in the round of 16. He then scored the winning goal against Paraguay in the round of 16 and found the net again against Morocco in the quarterfinals.

New York, July 20:  Spain centre-back Pau Cubarsi has won the FIFA Young Player Award for his outstanding performances during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Cubarsi started all eight matches for La Roja, as they soared to a second world crown with a 1-0 extra-time triumph over Argentina in the final on Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium.

Cubarsi never put a foot wrong as he helped Spain register seven clean sheets during the tournament, forging a fabulous partnership alongside Aymeric Laporte at the heart of a defence that conceded just a single goal, in their 2-1 quarter-final win against Belgium.

The 19-year-old, who has become one of only five teenagers in history to have won the World Cup, is also the first defender to win this award. He has now joined the likes of Pele, Franz Beckenbauer, Michael Owen, Thomas Muller, Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe, who also won the Young Player award in previous editions of the tournament.

Cubarsí, who helped Spain keep seven clean sheets at the FIFA World Cup 2026, is also only the fifth defender after Franz Beckenbauer, Władysław Żmuda, Antonio Cabrini and Manuel Amoros to win the Young Player award.

His seven clean sheets are the most ever registered in a single World Cup. Seven goalkeepers had managed five: the Netherlands’ Jan Jongbloed in 1974, Italy’s Walter Zenga in 1990, Brazil’s Claudio Taffarel in 1994, France’s Fabien Barthez in 1998, Germany’s Oliver Kahn in 2002, Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon in 2006 and Spain’s Iker Casillas in 2010.

Dating back to Qatar 2022, Simon had gone 649 minutes without conceding in a World Cup match until the Belgium match.

New York, July 20:  Spanish midfield maestro Rodri has secured the Golden Ball, awarded to the FIFA World Cup Player of the Tournament, for his performances in the 2026 global showpiece.

Spain - already reigning European champions - edged out Argentina in the World Cup final in extra time, with former City man Ferran Torres firing home the game’s only goal.

Rodri was a steady presence in the centre of the park for La Roja in their eight matches, helping them win their second global crown.

He featured in all of La Roja’s matches en route to glory, completing more passes, covering more distance and have more player involvements (distinct touches or participations) than any other player at this summer’s tournament.

His linking of defence with attack, timely interventions and pinpoint passing played a large role in Spain’s conquest, not least in the 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the final at New York New Jersey Stadium.

In the decider, the 30-year-old completed 101 of 105 passes, won 80 per cent of his duels and created two chances. Across the whole tournament, meanwhile, his intelligent work supporting his defenders was one of the factors in Spain conceding just one goal in their eight matches.

He’s also become only the 11th man in football history to win the World Cup, UEFA Champions League and Ballon d’Or.

New Delhi, July 20:  Three Indian students have won the government-backed national innovation hackathon for developing an impact-resistant sports T-shirt that helps reduce injuries caused by high-speed ball strikes, according to a statement issued on Monday.

B.Tech Fashion Technology students -- Nandheeswar M., G. Saran and Sushmitha K.S. -- from Sona College of Technology, Tamil Nadu, have secured first prize at Sanrachna, the Design Innovation Hackathon that was organised by the Ministry of Textiles during BharatTex 2026 here from July 14 to 17.

The team also received a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh after emerging as winners among more than 700 entries.

The students developed a specially designed sports T-shirt featuring an inner protective layer treated with a shear-thickening fluid (STF), an advanced material that remains soft and flexible during normal use but instantly stiffens on impact.

The technology absorbs and disperses the force generated by high-speed ball strikes, helping reduce the risk of injuries to athletes.

The innovation is intended for use in sports such as cricket, hockey, football, volleyball and golf.

According to the statement issued by the educational institution, the project aims to combine comfort with protection, allowing athletes to wear lightweight apparel without compromising mobility while providing additional safety during play.

In another achievement, a second team from the Department of Fashion Technology received the Special Innovation Recognition Award in the Best Innovation Project category for developing a flame-resistant finishing process for cotton fabric using natural resources.

The team -- comprising Supriya E., Monika S. and Kabila Shree N.R. -- was recognised for its sustainable approach, innovative use of natural materials and potential applications in protective textiles.

Congratulating the students, S.R.R. Senthilkumar, Principal of Sona College of Technology, said the awards reflected the institution's focus on innovation and interdisciplinary learning.

"Our students are encouraged to translate scientific knowledge and engineering principles into practical solutions for real-world challenges. Their success at BharatTex 2026 demonstrates the department's strengths in technical textiles, functional apparel and product innovation with societal impact," he said.

The Sanrachna Design Innovation Hackathon was organised by the Ministry of Textiles with support from the National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM) to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in technical textiles and functional apparel.

Kovilpatti, July 20:  A major political controversy erupted in Tamil Nadu after Vilathikulam DMK MLA Markandeyan was arrested in the early hours of Monday for allegedly making threatening remarks against Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a public meeting in Kovilpatti.

The arrest came after videos of his speech went viral on social media, triggering widespread criticism and demands for action.

The DMK public meeting was held on Sunday night at the Krishnan Kovil Grounds in Kovilpatti. The event was presided over by MLA I. Karunanidhi and attended by several party functionaries, including the party's union secretaries Beekilipatti Murugesan, Radhakrishnan, Jayakannan, Subramanian, Karuppasamy and Chinnapandian.

Addressing the gathering, Markandeyan launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Vijay over recent political developments and the functioning of the State Assembly.

In the course of his speech, he allegedly warned the Chief Minister that if the Assembly was convened, “your bones will not remain intact”, and further claimed that DMK legislators would “break your bones and send you back”.

The remarks were widely viewed as a direct threat against the Chief Minister. Videos of the speech spread rapidly across social media platforms on Sunday night, drawing strong condemnation from political parties and members of the public.

Critics accused the MLA of using violent and inflammatory language against a constitutional office-holder, with several leaders demanding immediate legal action.

Acting on the complaints, police arrested Markandeyan from his residence in Vilathikulam during the early hours of Monday.

He was taken into custody and escorted by police for questioning as part of the investigation.

The arrest sparked protests by the MLA’s supporters, who gathered outside his residence, raised slogans against the police action and attempted to block the police vehicle carrying him.

Police dispersed the protesters and cleared the road before taking the legislator away.

Police sources said Markandeyan was taken to the office of the Superintendent of Police for further questioning.

He is expected to be produced before a court after the completion of the preliminary investigation.

The arrest of the sitting DMK legislator has generated significant political attention in Tamil Nadu, with the controversy intensifying the ongoing confrontation between the ruling government and the opposition. The investigation is continuing.
